Winter can be hell on your lips and even more so if you’re not prepared. The cold weather, wind and illness will make your lips cracked and rough unless you take some steps to prevent it! Personally, I prefer my lips to be soft all year round and thought it was about time to show off my quick tips and lip-saving products that come in handy this time of year.
First thing you should do year round for the whole of your skin, let alone health, is drink water. There is no such thing as too much water and unless you’re allergic, there are no negative side effects, so just do it. I keep my giant Starbucks cup full of water with me at all times just as a reminder and to measure how much I drink per day. It’s about 710mL per full cup. If you can’t stand water, there are many things you can add to make it flavoured from lemons, mint leaves, limes, berries and beyond. No excuses.
Lips are just like any other skin and need a good cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing all of which I do at night. Usually, to clear my lips of whatever I am wearing, I will simply use my Balea makeup wipes or a wash cloth while I am cleansing my face at night. I would hope everyone at least does this on a daily basis!
To exfoliate, I have heard so much about the Lush lip scrubs. I have also heard a million and one recipes to make your own. Both options seem great to me but honestly, I am so fussy about using my fingers to apply product. Perhaps that is a ridiculous reason to steer away from these options, but either way, there is a product that does the trick for me! E.l.f. makes a lip exfoliator in a tube – simply called e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator – which works wonders and is inexpensive. All I do is use it like a regular lipstick and rub it over my lips a few times before rubbing my lips together. To remove the sugary residue, I just use my washcloth or make up wipe again and it’s done!
Lastly, moisturize. Lip balms are the key to keeping lips soft and irritation free during the dry times of the year. My favs are the Lippy Girl Lip Love Conditioning stick which I have mentioned before, but for a bit of a tinted option, the Fresh Sugar lip treatments work well too. I must admit, I wear these at night too sometimes, but they are ideal to keep in your purse if you need some hydration plus colour during the day.
If you have any other lip care tips, let me know! The more the merrier.
Til next time, ttfn x
