Matte Me Crazy

As you may recall, I have been scouting out a good mattifying top coat since the moment I discovered you could get a mattifying top coat. A year or so ago, I saw what I would say is a pretty popular picture and fell in deep, deep love with the look. So, a trip to Sally’s later, I came home with the Orly Matte Top Coat and the China Glaze polish in Pelican Gray. At first, it was spot on to the look I was going for, but after a few hours, my nails were already chipping, and no longer matte. How. Annoying.

Ever since, the search for the perfect matte top coat has been going on in my mind. I know that OPI has a matte option but to be totally honest, I haven’t been a fan of the OPI base or top coats I have tried and they are around the $10 mark so, I didn’t bother. Earlier in March though, this little $3 gem caught my eye. I know my dear friend Nancy (SpiffyKerms) has used this before, so I had pretty high hopes!

The NYC Matte Me Crazy Mattifying Top Coat may not look like anything special as the packaging is pretty generic and the wording has already started to rub off, but I believe you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. It’s what inside that counts. To put this baby to the test, I painted my nails with a baby pink crème from Revlon in Cardshark and a glitter from Deborah Lippmann in Whatever Lola Wants. First things first, the brush is awesome for coverage and a smooth application. It took about 4-5 minutes to fully dry to a mostly matte finish. Look how baby soft and smooth it looks in comparison to the slick and shiny nail (with no top coat).

Over glitter, it’s a different story. Honestly, I don’t know what I was expecting, but there is a picture of a gorgeous matte glitter mani floating around and I figured there would be a similar effect. Alas, it didn’t change the polish much if at all.

The real kicker here though is how long this stuff lasted. Though I wouldn’t say it went 100% matte upon application, it stayed just about the same velvety texture for the full 6 days that the polish stayed on my nails. Yes, it was 6 days worth before my nails chipped. I can’t say for sure whether that was the Revlon polishes doing, or the NYC top coat, but I call that impressive.

In conclusion, this is a product I would totally recommend. It is inexpensive, smooth, consistent and loooooong lasting. I will be checking out a whole lot more of the NYC nail polishes now that I know what to expect. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe they can be found at Shoppers, Rexall and Walmart in Canada – let me know if they can be found anywhere else too!

Til next time, ttfn x
