#MOTD: Something Old, Something New

And no, this isn’t another wedding post.

Inspired by Beauty With Emily Fox on YouTube, I took a look through my old favourites from the past few years that I have been blogging and put them to the test to see what I still liked and what was just a phase. Where does the ‘something new’ come in? I had to fill in the gaps with some of my current favourites from my collection. Enjoy!

Bare Minerals Prime Time Foundation Primer Original (January 2016)

This primer is still as lovely as ever. I wouldn’t say it is my number 1 primer as I do find that my skin can look a little dry and my pores are still a little bit visible, but I have kept it because I love how it feels on the skin.

Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless foundation in 110 Porcelain (January 2016)

My favourite thing about this foundation is the colour match. Other than that, I wouldn’t say this is gives me either a matte or poreless finish and it doesn’t feel great on my skin. I no longer support the company as it isn’t cruelty-free but regardless, I am not in love with this product anymore.

Hard Candy Glamoflauge Heavy Duty Concealer (February/March 2015 and again in October 2015)

For inexpensive and full coverage, I don’t think you can beat this. It does separate a little and the packaging isn’t ideal, but I do like how this looks under the eyes.

NYX Rouge Cream Blush in Glow (August 2015)

This was my wedding day blush so you know it is still my number 1. I love how this blush gives life to my skin with a bit of a glow without the oil slick. I prefer cream blushes and find that this one is one of the more pigmented with fantastic staying power.

elf HD Undereye Setting Powder and Tone Correcting Powder (CURRENT)

I am blown away that I haven’t raved about these two inexpensive, cruelty-free powders. I rarely will use anything else. They both set my make up well without oxidizing or drying out my skin. They are easy to use and apply, and keep my oily skin under control. I do need to touch up through the day (I use blotting papers to do so) but these look and feel so good.

Too Faced Candlelight Glow Highlighter (July 2015)

That glow though. I still love this highlighter. It has a gorgeous, healthy shine to it while being a good balance of natural and glamourous.

Annabelle Skinny Brow Liner in Universal Medium (pictured is Universal Taupe – January 2016)

This is my go-to and it is drugstore. I am constantly using these up and repurchasing them. If there is one item you try from this post, it should be this.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance (February/March 2015)

This is another product that I use every day and have multiple backups of. It is my favourite eye primer because of how smooth it feels on the lids and how beautifully pigment sticks to it.

March Jacobs Twinkle Pop in Honey Bunny (February/March 2015 and again in December 2015)

This isn’t quite an every day product for me, but when I need a pop of glossy, glittery shine, this is the only thing I reach for. I set this with a few shades in the ABH MR palette (next) here but the cream shadow still shines through. It is simply gorgeous.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette (Fall 2016)

Who doesn’t love this palette? It has so many warm tones, a good variety of colour and neutrals, and the formula is simply one of the best.

Annabelle Stay Sharp Metallic eyeliner in Bronzy (September 2015)

This entire range of Stay Sharp products from Annabelle are 100% worth checking out. I have loved everything I have tried. This particular shade is my favourite because it works so well with my eye colour, but they all stay put and are easy to apply.

Marcelle Double Precision Liquid Liner (CURRENT)

I forgot how much I am in love with this matte, drugstore liner. It is easy to apply and pigmented. I don’t know how I haven’t mentioned this one before either because it has been a favourite since highschool.

Buxom Lash Mascara (CURRENT)

This is a super dark, lengthening mascara that doesn’t disappoint. If you are not a fan of the Too Faced BTS mascara because it is clumpy, here is your not-so-clumpy dupe (to clarify, I do love them both).

Bite High Pigment Pencil in Madeira (May 2015)

This shade isn’t available but I am sure Bite has a similar shade in their permanent collection. Bite specializes in lip products so of course, they are amazing. The one and only issue I have is the wear time but honestly, they feel so lovely to apply that I don’t mind.

Make Up For Ever Lab Shine Lip Gloss in D16 (January 2015)

This lip gloss line is no longer available but luckily, I have found a new favourite that is pretty similar and there is no surprise, it is from Bite. The Bite Lush Fruit Lip Gloss line is the same thick and glossy shine that lasts which is what I loved about the MUFE gloss.

I hope you enjoyed this blast from the past – I know I did! Let me know which ones you’ve tried.

Five Fall Favourites 2016

We’re starting slow.
I’m here with some of my fall favourites after a long winded absence. I hope you didn’t miss me too much. While I’ve been gone, I got married, we bought a car, and I took the chance to organize my life a little bit. It was a stressful few months but happy none-the-less. Though I did slow down on buying and even wearing make up, skin care and nail polish, I was able to find some fantastic favourites for autumn.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette

Available at Sephora for $55 CDN.
This 14 shade palette of quality eyeshadows contains a beautiful array of warm shades with a few romantic shades sprinkled in. I have been obsessed with ABH eye shadows for some time now for their pigment, wear time and blend-ability. In fact, I wore them on my wedding day. If you haven’t already given them a try, I would recommend picking up a single or four (a single is only $16 CDN at Sephora) or take the plunge and get a coordinated palette of shadows. I seriously doubt you will regret it.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Matte Long Wear Lipstick in Drop Dead Red

Available at Sephora for $25 CDN.
I am very impressed by the longevity and strong pigment of these liquid lipsticks. I picked this shade up for autumn/winter since I didn’t have such a deep red in my collection and wanted something that would stay put on my lips. My only issue with this is it does transfer no matter how long I leave it to dry. It does become a beautiful matte on the lips and was not patchy in the least. I am sure I will pick up a few more of these to try during the Sephora sale (coming November).

Wet n Wild Fergie Centerstage Collection To Reflect Shimmer Palette in Hollywood Boulevard

No longer available
I received this in a make up swap a few months ago and have been loving it as a warm, golden highlight. At first glance, it doesn’t seem like it would work and would be too dark or colourful on me, but mixed, it is a lovely yellow gold highlight that is light enough for my pale skin. It’s huge, it’s inexpensive, and it’s just the right amount of highlight on the cheekbones. If you can get your hands on these highlighters, I would recommend picking one up.

Kaia Naturals The Takesumi Detox Bamboo Charcoal Deodorant in Cold Pressed Rose

Available at Kaia Naturals for $21
I will start off by saying this isn’t perfect. Does it withstand summer sweat? Not entirely. Is it inexpensive? No. However, the most noticable benefit to this deodorant so far is it is helping with the discolouration on my arm pits. The deodorant is also aluminum free, vegan and 99% natural. I have also been breakout free since using this deodorant which tends to be a theme amount natural deodorant. Though I wish it was less expensive, I am pretty pleased with it so far.

Lush Shampoo Bar in Jumping Juniper

Available at Lush for $10.95
While perusing the Lush store in my city, I came across the Shampoo Bars. These convenient little suckers have no packaging, making it a little more environmentally friendly, lather up extraordinarily well, and smell great. They seem to last quite a few washes which was my top concern when purchasing it. My hair always feel clean after using this and I can typically last three days oil-free.

Those are the 5 products I’ve been enjoying the most this autumn. What have your favourites been?

#MOTD: My Wedding Day

For the big day, I had to use the products that were near and dear to my heart so many of these are holy grail status make up items. It’s a great idea to use your die hard products on important days (such as a wedding) to ensure you have one less thing to worry about through the day. You know how everything wears, you know it wont cause problems, and you feel and look great.

Before the make up though, I did a spa-like skin care routine to make sure my face was perfectly even, plump and ready for make up. My tip: use a charcoal mask to remove some impurities the night before and a brightening, hydrating sheet mask the morning of.

My first ever Make Up Geek haul ft. Sephora, Nail Polish Canada

This may or may no surprise you but I have never made an order for Make Up Geek products before. It’s a little crazy how quickly MUG blew up but I never did get swept into all the hype. I’ve heard so many good things but most commonly that they are very similar to MAC at half the price. I planned on checking them out sooner or later and finally, I found the deal I had been waiting for.

Top L to R: In The Spotlight, Bedrock, Masqurade. Middle L to R: Shimma Shimma, Mermaid, Peach Smoothie. Bottom L to R: Mai Tai, Poppy, Phantom.
I had a good idea of what I wanted but hadn’t taken the plunge until I saw a beautiful-fantastic-amazing sale: 9 shadows for $30. Here is a similar deal but this exact set is no longer available (the individual shades are). The best part about this deal was that 5/9 shadows were ones I was eyeing up.

In The Spotlight: I hadn’t heard about this shade before but it might just be my favourite of the bunch. It is a wildly intense rust/gold duo-chrome.

Bedrock (wanted): I don’t know exactly what drew me into this matte taupe-grey but I am glad to have one in my z palette!

Masqurade: I hadn’t heard about this shade either but all you had to say was purple foiled eye shadow. Sold!

Shimma Shimma: I had heard endlessly about this shadow and now I totally understand why. It’s a GORGEOUS champagne sparkle that stands out.

Mermaid (wanted): I am not a frequent blue-eyeshadow girl, this is so unique and stunning. It is an amazing aqua gold pigment.

Peach Smoothie (wanted): Has anyone not heard of peach smoothie? I wanted to try this orangey peach shade and see what all the hype is about.

Mai Tai: This is really subtle baby pink/peach shadow that is freaking gorgeous.

Poppy (wanted): Who could resist a rorange like that?

Phantom (Wanted): This shadow is rightfully named. This goes from a soft lilac to a vibrant frost depending which way you’re looking at it. A very stand out shade.

Top: Voltage. Bottom: Dirty Martini.
Then of course, while I was at it, I wanted to pick up a few singles that caught my eye.

Dirty Martini: I can honestly say I don’t have anything this colour in my collection. When this khaki/olive shade started trending in the fall, I fell deeply in love with it. I have a lot of plans for this beauty.

Voltage: This is a very interesting white/yellow duo-chrome that I am excited to play around with.

Top L to R: Voltage, Mermaid, Shimma Shimma, Dirty Martini, Peach Smoothie, Poppy, Bedrock. Middle L to R: Mai Tai, Phantom. Bottom L to R: In The Spotlight, Masqurade.

From Nail Polish Canada, I had to pick up an essential: the Lippy Girl Lip Love Lip Conditioning stick. Roxanne and I are hooked on this and it lasted us forever. Vegan, cruelty free, amazing quality. To bump me up to free shipping, I also picked up the elf blush brush for blush and the Real Techniques Setting brush for highlighting.

Unfortunately, I also picked up the LA Girl Pro Conceal in the wrong shade (Light Ivory is the second lightest shade and it is WAY too dark for me – oops!). In my next order, I will pick up Porcelain and see how that goes.

Is any haul complete without some Sephora goodies? Somehow, I was able to convince myself that I needed even more eye shadow so I picked up the ABH Artist Palette. I am in love with their eye shadow formula like you wouldn’t believe so it really was a no brainer.

While I was at it and I had 15% off (Thank you VIB Rouge status), I also picked up one of the few available Too Faced Melted Matte lipstick in Drop Dead Red. I shockingly have no lip products this colour so I didn’t feel too guilty picking it up plus I get to try out their newest creation. So far, I haven’t worn it out but the colour is just as perfect as I imagined. I originally went online looking for the Urban Decay Corrector Fluid in Green that I was drooling over in store the previous week. It seems to be like a liquid concealer but it dries down to a beautiful matte that you don’t really have to mess around with. It’s kind of perfect.

I hope you enjoyed this mid-spring haul. I know I certainly did! All products mentioned are cruelty-free (as far as I am aware). Have you tried any of these products? What do you think?

The Palette Tag

Hey all! I’ve seen this little tag floating around the beauty community and tough I don’t remember if I was tagged (let me know if I was and I am simply forgetting), I thought it would be a whole lot of fun to do anyway.  Continue reading “The Palette Tag”

Best of 2015

best of 2015
Hey all! Welcome to the final day of 2015. I hope it is going well. Today, I thought I would talk about my favourite products that I have discovered this year. Some of these are now staples in my collection and you know them all if you have been tuning in for a while. I have mentioned most of these products in previous favourites or reviews which means they have withstood the test of time and I am still loving them. Let’s get into it.

Skin Care

reversa solution for oily acne prone skin vichy normaderm night detox
You may be totally aware that skin care has been priority number 1 for me this year and with that came a slew of products. The start of it all for me was the Vichy Normaderm Night Detox moisturizer that I initially received as a sample from Shoppers in March/April. It makes the world of difference for my skin in terms of acne. I have gone from some pretty painful breakouts to one-two little pimples using this product alone. Another acne fighting game-changer for me has been the Reversa Solution for Oily and acne prone skin**. I have used this both as a toner and an acne spot treatment and it delivers amazing results both ways. Pimples disappear in a day or two and my blackheads are clearing up making for a much smoother complexion. This is also available at Shoppers which I would never have guessed would be my one-stop-shop for skin care.

glamglow lippy girl lip love lip conditioning stick
If you know me, you know masks are my favourite thing and I have so many of them. The Glamglow Supermud clearing treatment is still my number one holy grail mud mask to clear things up but with the improvement in my skin near the end of the year, I see a change on the horizon. Regardless, this was my go-to mask for 2015 and it is totally worth it for you if you have oily/acne prone skin. My final skin care find of 2015 was a lip balm which I don’t think I will ever stray from: the Lippy Girl Lip Love Lip Conditioning stick in Eucalyptus Mint. This is an amazing balm for healing and hydrating and on top of that, it has all the good qualities of a product: cruelty-free, organic, lasts forever, smells great. All the good stuff.

Make Up

smashbox photo finish primers
physicians formula nude rose blush make up for ever ultra hd foundation benefit hello flawless oxygen wow foundation lise watier portfolio corrector wheel

What you’re really here for is the make up. There are quite a few in 2015 that I found and love and as usual, we will start with the primer. No shock here that my number one is the Smashbox Photo Finish primer. Thus far, I have enjoyed the entire line with my favourite being the Colour Correcting green shade to help with the redness I get in my cheeks. I also use the Lise Watier Portfolio Concealer Wheel daily to spot correct around my nose, mouth and cheeks with the green shade. The consistency is lovely with high coverage but no oiliness or cakey feel. I wish I had more uses for the other four shades in the palette but either way, it’s worth it to have this concealer in my routine.

For foundation, I have to go with the Benefit Hello Flawless and Make Up For Ever Ultra HD foundation. I love the coverage, the colour match, the lasting power, the finish and everything else for both of these. Though quite pricey, but I don’t think anything else I have tried quite compares. I prefer the Benefit Foundation far more when used without powder with its super yellow tones but when I am going for a more mattified complexion, the MUFE foundation is perfect. Another favourite face product would be the Physicians Formula blush in Nude Rose. This is a natural but very pink blush that I go for way more often than I would ever have guessed. It is hard to go to heavy handed with this blush because it is so nude-wearing but it gives a super pretty finish in my opinion.

annebelle stay sharp eye liner bronzey snow white too faced shadow insurance primer abh world traveller palette
For the eyes, it may not be a surprise that the Anastasia Beverly Hills World Traveler palette was my number one this year. It stole the show. The warm neutral but still bold shades and amazing pigmentation while still being soft and blendable. Seriously out of this world and I want to buy everything ABH has in powder form. Holy cow, I still can’t get over how beautiful this is. Before shadow comes primer and my eye shadow primer of choice is the Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer. It doesn’t look or feel cakey and it makes my shadows stick without ruining my blending which is something I haven’t found in other primers yet.

I have neglected eye liner a little bit this year but I still have a pencil and liquid fave. Annabelle totally blew me away with the Annabelle Stay Sharp eye liners of which I have a deep and undying love for Bronzey**, their brown metallic shade. It is water proof and doesn’t disappear through the day. It simply always looks flawless. My number one liquid liner I do not have anymore (ran out unfortunately) but still deserves a mention. It is the Make Up For Ever Ink Liner** and it is everything perfect in a liner. Easy to apply, black as it gets, matte and budge proof. It isn’t, however, waterproof.

Everything Else

colab dry shampoo rio new york
I have a hair and nail favourite that I thought should mention. For the hair, I pretty much stick to dry shampoo and my number one is totally COLAB Sheer Invisible or Xtreme Volume in Rio. I find the Xtreme Volume line harsher on my hair but when I need that volume, it is just the best. I don’t find their to be any white residue, it smells great and feels fantastic too. In terms of nails, the Essence Nail Art Express Dry Drops have become a staple when I do my nails. It is awesome on my cuticles and dries my nails quickly with little mess. Did I mention it is only $3?

Why not also throw in a trend favourite of 2015? I personally love the chunky boot style that I have seen this year and have picked up 2 pairs this fall that I adore. I don’t typically wear heels or care about shoes but these two from Spring are insanely comfortable and so beautiful. The Galiredien and Kingsmore styles are both on sale and I totally recommend giving them a try!

2015 as a year was pretty amazing and I can only hope to have another year like it for 2016! Let me know what you have loved this year so I can give them a try. Happy New Years all!

September 2015 Favourites and Unfavourites

It’s time again to go through all of the things I have both loved and well, didn’t love for the past 30 days. September was really happy for me as I started using a few old faves and discovered some new things that were totally me. I also went full force into the fall spirit (my favourite season) with some dark colours and even boots.

I don’t typically put non-beauty related things in here, but this month I fell head over heels for these shoes. These are the Galiredien boots from Spring in the colour I am currently obsessed with, Khaki. I have been so attracted to the chunky heeled boots but never went for it because I am horrible in heels and really don’t need the height (I am 5ft10in). However, I decided to give these a try since they were $20 off and just awesome looking. Man oh man, are these comfortable. I have a funny feeling I am going to wear the crap out of these the next few months (and maybe even into winter).

A bit of a shameless plug here: I just got a snapchat this month and I have been so into it. I am glued to my phone laughing at the bloggers and YouTubers I love on this unedited platform. My username (just as it is everywhere else) is newkeybeauty if you’re interested.

Before diving into beauty, I have a really random obsession to talk about: Shark Documentaries. I couldn’t tell ya why if I tried, but I have spent a good 50+ hours this month watching them. Roxy really enjoys the Great White and Shark Attack stories where I prefer learning about all of the different sharks and their habits. Before bed, on the weekend, during lunch I have been just scouring the Internet to find stuff we haven’t seen. I feel like a Shark expert now.

Finally, onto some beauty. I have been loving these two eye shadow palettes this past month. You have already heard me rant and rave about the Anastasia Beverly Hills palette which is so hard not to love, but I have also found my favourite drugstore palette in the Annabelle Smokey Nudes 10 shadow palette. The colours are easy to build up and blend out and I am still really into the whole earth toned eye looks.

Also on my eyes, I have also started using the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara which was an old fave. I picked up the full sized product about a year ago after finishing a sample size when I determined it truly was my new holy grail. Recently, after starting to use a few mascaras that I didn’t really like, I thought I would treat myself and finally open this fantastic mascara. It is exactly what I remember: super black, super thick and lengthening.

I also tried out these two eye liners both from Annabelle. I received a package from the brand and wanted to test out a few things including the Smokey Nudes Palette above. I have used the Annabelle Stay Sharp eye/lip liner line before but this is the Metallic eye version in Bronzey. I have been using this waterproof formula in my waterline lately and it stays put. The colour is also beautiful and flows well with the warm shades I am so into right now. Unfortunately, I gave the Annabelle EyeInk 2 an honest try but it just does not work. The formula is hard to work with and the colour is thin, weird, slightly transparent grey colour. It looks watered down and is impossible to build upon. This was a total bust for me.

A few more make up products I have kind of changed my mind on: the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer and the Make Up For Ever HD Blush in 410. I have been using these both pretty much every day to try and use them up and along the way, I started to really love what they were doing. The Smashbox Photo Finish primer makes my face make up ready by smoothing everything out and allowing my concealer and foundation to glide on so smoothly. I used to have issues with it making my face slick but my skin care is helping to control my oily issue and it doesn’t seem to be such a problem. The MUFE HD Bluch is (obviously) just a sample but I have noticed it applies so well in comparison to some other cream blushes. I think the colour is so pigmented, looks great on my skin and it blends out well with help from the Ecotools Duo Fibre brush I talked about last month.

I have discovered the ultimate comfort of gel deodorant. This Dove Men + Care Deodorant was Roxy’s but she found it really drying so she asked if I wanted it. Though I don’t typically go for men’s products (razors, deodorant, etc) as some women do, I didn’t want it to go to waste. I am so glad I didn’t. This is the most comfortable product I have ever applied and I just can’t go back to using the powdered deodorants I have always used which now feel rough and painful. I don’t know anything more about the different types of formulas or scents, but I am planning to use this up and give more of the gel-type deodorants a try. Why did no one ever tell me about this?

A shampoo favourite this month is the uhaircare Volumising cleanser which Roxy also picked up and passed along to me (you may remember it from my Winners haul a few months back). This stuff totally degreases my hair while leaving it silky smooth. I can easily go 2-3 days without my hair looking oily which has never happened before. It doesn’t suck the moisture from my hair though as it is still so soft and smooth. I am not sure where else to pick this up other than Winners, but I may just have to go searching.

On my nails, I have really loved the Sephora by OPI Happy Earth Day! which was part of my fall polish picks. I know a lot of people don’t like this olive/khaki colour but I am really obsessed with it this year. This polish is no longer available but I am sure there are some dupes out there. For every manicure I have done lately, I also use the Essence Nail Art Express Dry Drops. For $3, they work like a charm to dry my nails and soften my cuticles.

That’s all she wrote! I hope you’re enjoying this weather as much as I am.
