#MOTD: Something Old, Something New

And no, this isn’t another wedding post.

Inspired by Beauty With Emily Fox on YouTube, I took a look through my old favourites from the past few years that I have been blogging and put them to the test to see what I still liked and what was just a phase. Where does the ‘something new’ come in? I had to fill in the gaps with some of my current favourites from my collection. Enjoy!

Bare Minerals Prime Time Foundation Primer Original (January 2016)

This primer is still as lovely as ever. I wouldn’t say it is my number 1 primer as I do find that my skin can look a little dry and my pores are still a little bit visible, but I have kept it because I love how it feels on the skin.

Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless foundation in 110 Porcelain (January 2016)

My favourite thing about this foundation is the colour match. Other than that, I wouldn’t say this is gives me either a matte or poreless finish and it doesn’t feel great on my skin. I no longer support the company as it isn’t cruelty-free but regardless, I am not in love with this product anymore.

Hard Candy Glamoflauge Heavy Duty Concealer (February/March 2015 and again in October 2015)

For inexpensive and full coverage, I don’t think you can beat this. It does separate a little and the packaging isn’t ideal, but I do like how this looks under the eyes.

NYX Rouge Cream Blush in Glow (August 2015)

This was my wedding day blush so you know it is still my number 1. I love how this blush gives life to my skin with a bit of a glow without the oil slick. I prefer cream blushes and find that this one is one of the more pigmented with fantastic staying power.

elf HD Undereye Setting Powder and Tone Correcting Powder (CURRENT)

I am blown away that I haven’t raved about these two inexpensive, cruelty-free powders. I rarely will use anything else. They both set my make up well without oxidizing or drying out my skin. They are easy to use and apply, and keep my oily skin under control. I do need to touch up through the day (I use blotting papers to do so) but these look and feel so good.

Too Faced Candlelight Glow Highlighter (July 2015)

That glow though. I still love this highlighter. It has a gorgeous, healthy shine to it while being a good balance of natural and glamourous.

Annabelle Skinny Brow Liner in Universal Medium (pictured is Universal Taupe – January 2016)

This is my go-to and it is drugstore. I am constantly using these up and repurchasing them. If there is one item you try from this post, it should be this.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance (February/March 2015)

This is another product that I use every day and have multiple backups of. It is my favourite eye primer because of how smooth it feels on the lids and how beautifully pigment sticks to it.

March Jacobs Twinkle Pop in Honey Bunny (February/March 2015 and again in December 2015)

This isn’t quite an every day product for me, but when I need a pop of glossy, glittery shine, this is the only thing I reach for. I set this with a few shades in the ABH MR palette (next) here but the cream shadow still shines through. It is simply gorgeous.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette (Fall 2016)

Who doesn’t love this palette? It has so many warm tones, a good variety of colour and neutrals, and the formula is simply one of the best.

Annabelle Stay Sharp Metallic eyeliner in Bronzy (September 2015)

This entire range of Stay Sharp products from Annabelle are 100% worth checking out. I have loved everything I have tried. This particular shade is my favourite because it works so well with my eye colour, but they all stay put and are easy to apply.

Marcelle Double Precision Liquid Liner (CURRENT)

I forgot how much I am in love with this matte, drugstore liner. It is easy to apply and pigmented. I don’t know how I haven’t mentioned this one before either because it has been a favourite since highschool.

Buxom Lash Mascara (CURRENT)

This is a super dark, lengthening mascara that doesn’t disappoint. If you are not a fan of the Too Faced BTS mascara because it is clumpy, here is your not-so-clumpy dupe (to clarify, I do love them both).

Bite High Pigment Pencil in Madeira (May 2015)

This shade isn’t available but I am sure Bite has a similar shade in their permanent collection. Bite specializes in lip products so of course, they are amazing. The one and only issue I have is the wear time but honestly, they feel so lovely to apply that I don’t mind.

Make Up For Ever Lab Shine Lip Gloss in D16 (January 2015)

This lip gloss line is no longer available but luckily, I have found a new favourite that is pretty similar and there is no surprise, it is from Bite. The Bite Lush Fruit Lip Gloss line is the same thick and glossy shine that lasts which is what I loved about the MUFE gloss.

I hope you enjoyed this blast from the past – I know I did! Let me know which ones you’ve tried.

#MOTD: My Wedding Day

For the big day, I had to use the products that were near and dear to my heart so many of these are holy grail status make up items. It’s a great idea to use your die hard products on important days (such as a wedding) to ensure you have one less thing to worry about through the day. You know how everything wears, you know it wont cause problems, and you feel and look great.

Before the make up though, I did a spa-like skin care routine to make sure my face was perfectly even, plump and ready for make up. My tip: use a charcoal mask to remove some impurities the night before and a brightening, hydrating sheet mask the morning of.

What’s in my Z Palette?

Hello all! This month is Sephora brand beauty month and though I don’t have a whole lot of their make up, I do have a few other things. For example, their Z Palettes.

Several months ago, I was looking into getting a Z Palette simply to consolidate my single eye shadows. I found that I wouldn’t reach for them and with all of the different shapes and sizes, it was a pain to store them. After some online searching, I happened upon the Sephora Collection palettes in their three different sizes. I have the baby and dome sizes.

Most recently, I picked up the baby sized palette to depot my Benefit Sweet Cheeks blush palette. It was so bulky and I never used it because it didn’t fit in with the rest of my palettes. This medium sized palette stores them all quite well and is about half the width (or more).

Top L to R: Benefit Rockatur, Bellabamba, Dandilion

Bottom L to R: Benefit Hoola, Sugar Bomb, Coralista

In my larger Z Palette are my eye shadows. I have a pretty good assortment of them and a lot of room to grow.

Top L to R: Maybelline Vanilla, Bare Minerals Passion, Muse, MUFE D 850, I340

Middle L to R: Urban Decay Oil Slick, Bust, Guilt, Skimp, MUFE M856, MAC Amethyst

Bottom L to R: Pop Beauty bronzer, Pacifica Celestial, Opal, MAC Black Grape

I depotted the Bare Mineral Inspiration duo as well as a 500 pt perk from Urban Decay for all of those mini’s at the top. Between these two palettes, I have everything I need to make my look and then some! I hope you enjoyed seeing what was in my Z palettes.

January 2016 Favourites & Unfavourites

Hey all! I have been pretty quiet around these parts this 2016 but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been playing with new things and rediscovering old. I am going to start with some exciting news (for me at least) and that is…

I will be joining the YouTube crowd starting as early as next week. I am very excited since YouTube is where I started my beauty obsession and ultimately, it’s where I wanted to end up. My first random favourite is actually the reason I am able to give it a try and that is my new Sandisk SD card. I was having a million and one issues getting my camera to film and tried many different things to troubleshoot my problem including but not limited to trying multiple SD cards (including one I had bought off of Amazon before this but it didn’t work either), upgrading the firmware on my Camera, trying every setting multiple times, watching a good 2+ hours worth of YouTube videos to figure out the different settings and what might be optimal, and then finally, going to Best Buy and picking up this 32GB class 10 baby. Ain’t she lovely?

Not even remotely along the same lines, I have been loving the Jasmine scent from Demeter**. It seems to have mixed reactions but honestly, I just love it. This is a lovely scent for the home or to wear and I can foresee me wearing this quite a bit in the spring. It is floral but very fragrant so blending it with other scents to tone it down might be your best bet and that’s what I do.

For skin care, there have been two major key elements joining my regular routine: serums and sheet masks. I have tried both before but didn’t care about them enough to incorporate them into my daily or even weekly regimen. This time around with my mind a little more open to the possibilities, I started using the many THEFACESHOP sheet masks I ordered on Boxing day. These sheet masks seem to stick to my skin and fit my face shape well. Each mask does actually appear to do something different too which was my first question when I ordered the amazing variety I did. They are a variety of hydrating, plumping, cooling, soothing, and have been a very enjoyable experience thus far with my favourite of them all being the Cucumber sheet mask.

As for serums, I switch daily between the Murad Environmental Shield and Philosophy Time in a Bottle. If I had to pick, I prefer the consistency of the Philosophy serum since it is easier to spread evenly across your skin. My skin is noticeably brighter with both of these under my morning moisturizer and that’s how I like it.

I have an oldie, a goodie and a newie eye product to talk about. For the oldie, I have been using the Annabelle Skinny Brow pencil in Universal Medium every single day. It can’t be beat. Quick, easy, lovely results, a good price, great shade range and cruelty-free to boot. I do think a decent spoolie on the end would make this product that much better but otherwise, it’s perfection.

The Voluminous Miss Manga mascara from L’Oreal is a goodie. I totally changed my mind about it since I used it the first time (what a mess) and have been using it pretty consistently since as early as November for some pretty gorgeous lashes. I don’t like how the wand bends still personally, but the formula and head work much better now for me.

What palette is that? Too Faced The Return to Sexy eye palette that’s what. I generously received for Christmas this 2015. Talk about glitter but I can’t get enough. If all Too Faced eye shadows are like this, sign me up. I will let those colours speak for themselves now…

I hate to basically bash a single brand but I tried to do a full face of make up using exclusively Benefit products and I just can’t. The Bad Gal lash, Watts Up highlighter, Positint, Stay Flawless primer and Fake Up Concealer just totally failed on me. Either they were underwhelming, patchy, not right for my skin tone or felt disgusting. Just to prove it, this is one of the pictures I took before washing it all off and doing something totally different.

You can tell by my face how I feel about this look. Other than that, I also discovered that the Rimmel Stay Matte primer isn’t for me after all. I may have liked it initially but at this point, I feel like my skin looks dry and even cakey when I use this with most if not all foundations in my collection. Their isn’t enough of a benefit to using this primer for me to keep trying so I will be passing it along.

The Essie polish you might have spotted is Parka Perfect and it is a beauty but I can’t get it to work. It will either bubble or wreck before it dries or both so despite the shade, I wont use it again.

Lets finish the post with my favourite face products and the show stopper this month is absolutely Oh Miley! from Marc Jacobs. This creme lipstick is flawless. The packaging is pure luxury but the formula and shade are right on as well. I don’t think I could possibly say enough good things about this lipstick.

I finally pulled out a new primer and foundation to try and discovered they are both winners. The Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless foundation should come as no shock. Everyone seems to love this stuff and I am no exception. It is a good shade for me and sits pretty well on my skin throughout the day. I feel like there is some oxidizing, but nothing out of hand. As for the primer, I feel like the Bare Minerals Prime Time is similar to my beloved Smashbox Photo Finish but a touch more lightweight. It almost seems more water based rather then silicone but it does give that slick finish you get with silicone primers.

I have been using the Jurlique Balancing Rose Water spray throughout the month as a boost of hydration and to bring a little more life to my skin when it’s looking a little on the dead, dry and cakey side. It feels nice and gives my skin a little more dew without going totally shiny. I am not much of a rose-scent lover but this is pretty alright in my books.

I think that’s about it for January. I can tell you now that February will be quite the mix of things if these first 11 days are any indication! Let me know what you’ve been loving lately. More importantly, let me know if I should keep doing this favourites posts!

#MOTD: Smokey Plum

Hey all! We’ve been over this a few times now, but I am obsessed with the colour purple. Lately, my make up has been quite tame but I am very ready to step out of that little box of nudes, tans, browns and champagnes I have been in all summer and into fall and break out the plums and burnt oranges and evergreens I have been mesmerized by lately.

A few weeks ago, I had mentioned doing a plum smokey eye using the Lorac Pro 2 and Tarte Rainforest After Dark palettes and I would say it’s about time I did it. I am not 100% confident in these dark eye looks on me but I still love to play around with looks like this to try them out.

Eye shadow primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer

Eye shadow: Tarte Rainforest After Dark palette and Lorac Pro 2 palette

Eye liner: Jesse’s Girl Black liquid liner and Urban Decay 24/7 eye liner in Zero

Mascara: Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara

Primer: Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting primer

Foundation: L’Oreal True Match Foundation in W2

Concealer: Maybelline Coverstick Concealer in Green, Covergirl True Blend Concealer in Light and Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in Fair

Powder: Bare Minerals Well Rested and Rimmel Stay Matte Translucent Powder

Brows: Quo brow powder/wax in Brunette and Benefit Gimmie Brow in Light

Blush: Tarte Unleashed

Highlight: Tarte Champagne

Lips: Marcelle Forever Sharp lip liner in Coral Pink** and Annabelle Twist Up Lipstick in Romance**.

I primed my lids before going in with Tatre Bare To Explore (light pink) & Lorac Beige all over the lid. To smoothly transition, I threw some Tarte Tan-goes Up In You (light tan brown) in the crease. Then blend blend blend. I added some Lorac Nectar in the crease and outter corner then finally Lorac Plum on top. Then blend blend blend again. I incorporated the Tarte Plum Away With Me by pressing it onto the lid and reapplied the Lorac Beige to the inner corner to brighten.

It looked incomplete without adding a little something to my bottom lash line so I smoked a black liner out with some Tarte Plum Away With Me. Some eye liner and mascara and these eyes are done! It’s worth noting that I also used the Annabelle EyeInk 2 corrector** to tidy up my eye liner. Man, that is handy.

Is two eye shadow palettes for one look a little excessive? Yes. Do I love it anyway? Yes. Totally excited about how these eyes turned out and am so happy to play with colour again. I hope you like the look as much as I do and let me know if there is anyting else you’re itching to see.

#MOTD: It’s Fall

This week, I took a look at some beautiful make up trends to keep an eye on this fall.  Now that the season is officially upon us, I can go wild with some bold and deep colours, new textures and beautiful warmth. I put together this  post totally inspired by Autumn trends I am looking forward to this year.

I wanted a semi-matte finish base to start so I took my current favourite combination of primer, concealer and foundation combo: the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, Maybelline Coverstick Corrector in Green, Covergirl TruBlend Fixstick in Light and the Benefit Hello Flawless foundation in Ivory. I wanted a more flawless finish so I went a little heavier on the concealer side of things. Under my eyes, I brightened as usual with the Rimmel Match Perfection 2 in 1 Concealer and Highlighter in Fair which I set with the Bare Minerals Concealer in Well Rested. Since the Smashbox Primer and Benefit Foundation give me a luminous shine, I set everything with the Rimmel Stay Matte powder to dull it down a bit and voila, I was left with a glowing matte finish.

I decided to be bold with the eyes and lips because Autumn is all about being bold. To make sure my shadows wouldn’t budge, I started with the Too Faced Shadow Insurance all over the lid. Next is a palette that I think is perfect for the season: The Anastasia Beverly Hills World Traveller Couture palette. For this look, I took Soft Peach all over the lid, then slowly built up a warm crease using Morocco, Noir and Fudge. I tried to do a very soft cut crease look so I used a pencil brush to focused Noir on the outter corner and slightly into the crease. Once everything was blended out to my liking, I patted Metallic on the lid which is an old gold colour that is super pigmented.

Eyeliner is always a must have for fall and I blended these two on my bottom lash line: Urban Decay 24/7 eye liner in Zero and Annabelle Stay Sharp Eyeliner in Bronzey. Though I love these Annabelle Stay Sharp liners, I am not so happy with the Annabelle EyeInk 2 Mistake Proof liquid eyeliner. It was easy enough to apply and the corrector worked very well, but I found the eyeliner formula was just not working for me (as you will no doubt see in the closeup). Before adding the mascara, I created some bold brows using the Quo Brow Focus powder in Brunette and a small angled brush, then some Benefit Gimmie Brow to keep my brows in place.

Since I was being a little bolder than usual, I wanted my skin to look extra perfected so I used the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powders to lightly highlight and contour with. I also used the Make Up For Ever HD Blush in 410 on my cheeks which I am sure you’re used to seeing by now since I have been trying to use it up. Now that all of the powder is down, I finished up the eyes with my #1 mascara: the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. I will just let the picture speak for itself.

Plum lips are the way to go in Autumn so I picked out a fave: the Revlon Colourstay Moisture Stain in Parisian. That completes this bold but beautiful look that I am really love. What fall trends are you looking forward to this year?

August 2015 Favourites & Unfavourites

It’s the end of summer! These past few days and weeks, our household is looking ahead to fall. It’s all a little crazy to think about how fast 2015 has gone but I am getting pumped for the coming season! This past month, I was really into natural make up so I have a lot of basics. It’s time to take a look back at what products I loved and didn’t love so much for the past month.

First off, I have a foundation and primer. This Rimmel Stay Matte Primer and Benefit Hello Flawless foundation don’t work very good together unfortunately, but with other products, I have loved the results. The Rimmel Primer really keeps my face mattified and keeps the foundation and concealer on my face where it should be. I definitely like how it looks with the L’Oreal True Match! Make Up Forever Ultra HD foundation (review coming soon) or Rimmel Clean Finish Matte foundation so far but with the Benefit foundation, it ends up feeling cakey and making my skin a little dry looking (which I have never had happen).

This Benefit Hello Flawless foundation is actually my #1 foundation and one of the only Benefit products I really love. Their fairest shade in I’m Pure 4 Sure Ivory colour matches me perfectly, feels great, has good coverage and wear time and isn’t totally matte or totally dewy. If you have a yellow undertone, take a look at this collection of foundations because chances are, they will match you beautifully.

One of my recent brush favourites is one of the first brushes I ever owned and that is the Ecotools Stippling brush. I love using it with my cream blushes and have been just about every day. The application is perfect using this because it only picks up a bit of product with the longer bristles and then blends everything out using the short bristles. I haven’t seen any other stipping brush quite like this before. The size is perfect and the dramatic difference in bristle lengths makes this perfect for me!

This is more of a concealer routine favourite that I have for you. I have been using the Maybelline Fit Me concealer in Fair under the eyes and blending it out with the Ecotools Eye Perfection brush. I then set it with the Bare Minerals powder concealer in Well Rested with the perfectly fitting Real Techniques Contour brush. I love the effect this. It stays all day with very minimal creasing, is quick and easy to apply, has amazing coverage and the only thing I can see as a con is that it might not be brightening enough for some people. I do switch out the concealer often enough if I want more coverage or a brighter look but the brushes and powder are absolutely phenomenal.

One product I have discovered I really don’t like is the L’Oreal Miss Manga mascara. This does nothing for me. I have used it a few times hoping that it will impress me and it just kind of flops. It creates really thick lashes that go everywhere and doesn’t add length though it does have some lift. It also stinks which I can look passed if I liked the mascara but…no.

August was the month of negative space manicures for me. I purchased a few Vinyl nail strips from Beyond the Nail at the end of July and since they arrived, I have been using them every time I paint my nails. The effect is really awesome and these make the process a million times easier then doing it free hand or using tape. Speaking of nails though, I have finally come to the conclusion I don’t like the Revlon Diamond Strength top coat. My nails do have more shine when I use it but unless I use 2 or more coats, my nails just chip. It doesn’t make my nail polish look an smoother or last much longer. With 2 coats, it gets a little gloopy and takes a while to dry. Even glitter nail polish chips off after a day or two with 2 layers.

My skin care favourite is probably no surprise if you read the review I just recently posted. The Reversa Solution for oily and acne proned skin is my #1 toner. I love it. You can’t argue with the results I have had. I will be posting an updated skin care routine next week to round up all of the amazing skin care finds I have been using lately to heal my face and reduce my acne and scarring so stay tuned.

A rather odd favourite I have had this month is lipgloss. I noticed that I completely ran out of one of my Bite Beauty lip glosses near the beginning of the month and that set off an obsession with wearing all of these different lip glosses. I didn’t realize I was using it so much before but obviously if I finished a tube then I must have been applying it pretty frequently.

That’s everything! I predict that my September favourites will have a few fall items hanging around. I also see a certain concealer making its way in there!
