#MOTD: Unicorns and Rainbows

Feeling a little inspired by the Starbucks drink and Pride Week which is coming up fast, I decided to create a unicorn look using a variety of colourful shades and glitter.

I love how glowey and vibrant the eyes were! Both of the palettes I used for this are my favourites if I am going for a colourful look because they apply and blend so easily.

Sparkle and Shine

Hey all! Though we are nearing the end of December, I wanted to round up some of my favourite glistening, glittering make up products that you can use for New Years or any other celebrations you may be celebrating in the early months of 2016.

essie hor d'oeurves
I have talked about some of my beloved Nail Polish glitters before but didn’t get to include Essie’s Hour D’oeurves. This gold sparkle mixed with silver chunky glitters has shown up in a fair number of my own nail polish posts before but it truly deserves the attention. It’s quite the unique shade and a staple in many collections.

For the eyes, I had to mention the stunning Marc Jacobs Twinklepop shadow stick in Honey Bunny. I first saw this in a Vintage or Tacky review of the Twinklepops and it was literally love at first sight. I do not understand how someone could look over this and not buy it even with the hefty price tag. It is totally different from other products and totally luxurious.

With this is the Elizabeth Mott You’re So Fine liquid liner in Glitterati. Not going to lie, this kind of smells funny but it has from day one. I received it in an ipsy bag and love using it for a black liner that pops.

I very recently was heartbroken when discovering these were discontinued but I wanted to talk about it anyway. This is the Make Up For Ever Lab Shine lipgloss in D 16. Literally my favourite lip gloss ever. I am crossing my fingers and praying the Plexigloss that replaced these are just as good or better. This gloss, however, is a fantastic sheer nude with glitter throughout and it just enhances anything you pair it with.

milani dolce pink blush the balm mary-lou manizer

I couldn’t leave out the cult classic Mary-Lou Manizer highlight from the Balm. It is an intense glow as you likely have seen before since this is the most popular highlighter ever. Another cheek/face product I love would be the Milani Baked Blush in Dolce Pink. With my acne, I do have to ensure that my cheeks are free and clear when I wear this but when the situation is right, it is totally stunning.

Those are my top dog sparkling products that I totally recommend from Sephora to drugstore. I hope there are some gems in here you’re looking to try!

My Glitter Addiction

My obsession with glitter started way before I can even remember. I have always been drawn to the drama and shine. As a child, more often than not, I would be caught playing with jewelry, body glitter, press on jewels, stickers or even pure craft glitter in my spare time (in fact, I still have some hidden away in the basement). The ‘90s and early ‘00s were a fantastic time to go through that phase. In my teen and adult life though, I still find it very hard to resist the sparkle as you may have seen through some of my cosmetics. However, I try not to go quite so overboard and use body glitter… At least not in my day to day life. The easiest way to get away with every day glitter is with nail polish. Maybe that’s why I am so obsessed…

Since I moved, I had the chance to reorganize everything including my polish drawers. I have a whole drawer dedicated to different sparkles in every colour of the rainbow. While I organized and revisited each polish in my collection, I re-fell in love with a few that are worth a second look and paired them with other fantastic polish from my collection.
*Note: all base polishes are only 1 coat + a base coat. No top coat was used in the pictures.

First up, this adorable pastel glitter from Starrily in “Unicorn Chronicles”. With a clear base, this fantastic polish combines small square, circular and hexagonal glitter in varied pastel shades. It is so unique and subtle but goes with a variety of polish to make for a gorgeous accent nail or beautiful overall manicure. I paired it with a purple pastel from Essie called “Under Where?” for a magical combination.

This beautiful winter combination came from 2014’s OPI Holiday collection. “Snow Globetrotter” looks like dazzling lights with its variety of small and medium circular, hexagonal and squared glitter in blues, greens and whites. With one swipe, it practically covers your entire nail and shines. Sometime in December, I paired it with a beautiful navy crème polish which complimented the glitter so well that I have a hard time picturing it with another polish. Pictured is Revlon’s “Midnight Affair” which has a bit of a shine adding to the glitter effect.

If you read through my Deborah Lippmann Party Mix set, you have already seen these polishes in action. Deborah Lippman’s “99 Luftballons” contains an array small and medium sized hexagonal sparkles in many different, bold colours. Again, one swipe covers the whole nail with ease – and the formula is incredibly smooth too. The base is tinted red, so naturally I paired it with the phenomenal true red from Deborah Lippmann in “It’s Raining Men”. I have never owned a red polish that didn’t need more than one coat to give a perfect and true red before.

Another unique glitter is “Beam Me Up Lottie” from Ciate. I have mixed feelings about the Ciate formula as I find it a bit difficult to work with, but the finished nail is never a disappointment. They have several glitters that are out of this world including this matte finish gold and rose fragmented glitter. Paired with a nude, this is an exceptionally gorgeous glitter. Pictured is Ceramic Glaze in “Toasted Coconut”.

If you’re skeptical about glitter polish because it is difficult to get off, check out the Sephora brand nail polish remover. It is easily the best nail polish remover I have ever used and makes glitter removal simple. Please feel free to leave any nail polish recommendations below and I will be sure to check them out!

Only a week and a half left to enter my Deborah Lippmann giveaway! Don’t forget to enter.

Taking Out The Trash 2

Since I will be moving at the end of January, I have been going through all of my things and trying to either use them, donate them or trash them. It hasn’t been a long while since I did my very first Empties post but as you can see, I have used quite a few things in that time (and it is starting to overflow – oops). I warned you already that this is about to be really candle heavy and I don’t think I’ve disappointed! However, there are also a few make up, skin care and even a drink container. So without further ado, let’s take out the trash!

First things first, look at all of these candles. I burned through 5 three wick candles and 1 one wick to top it off. Out of every scent, my favourite has got to be the amazing London Calling Tea and Lemon scent. When I first sniffed this at Bath and Body Works, I really didn’t care for it. I don’t know what I was thinking but I did come to my senses (or scent-ses) and but it before it was totally gone. I wouldn’t say it was citrusy like many lemon fragranced things are, but it is warm and sweet but not sugary. Does that make sense? The smell is so powerful that it doesn’t have to be lit to enjoy it though obviously, I did light it and use it up completely! I believe they come out with it every year so I can’t wait to purchase it again when the time comes!
Moving onto another lemony candle, I had the Lemon Mint Leaf which is a soft minty scent. The smell really isn’t for everyone but if you’re a fan of fresh, minty candles, you’re going to have to try this. Again, I think they come back with this every year (but maybe that is just hopeful thinking). It is also an amazing kitchen candle as it is so fresh but fragrant. I love it!
If you notice, there are two Cider Lane candles from Slatkin & Co which I received as gifts. These smell exactly like apple juice and the entire time I had them burning, I craved it. There is one more one wick in my bedroom now but it is getting down there. However, it isn’t my favourite smell and it doesn’t linger very long. I don’t know if that is simply due to the light scent or because I don’t usually go for apple-scented candles, but I would love to see what other unique candles the company has to offer.
Ahh, Bourbon Butterscotch. If you recall, I ranted about how amazingly sweet this candle was. It smells like rich butterscotch which to taste, I don’t really care about, but obviously to smell, I loved. This was my number 1 candle this fall especially around thanksgiving. It is so warm and fills the entire room with the light scent. I had never seen it beforehand but I also never really go for the food scented candles (says the girl who has mostly food scented candle empties) unless it is fruit. I don’t know whether I will repurchase next year or not yet but I enjoyed it while it lasted.
I feel like I may be the only girl in the world that doesn’t like floral scented things. So many floral perfumes, candles, sprays and air fresheners are so overpoweringly strong, I feel like I could choke to death. Ok, maybe that is a bit overdramatic, but I still don’t usually like them. Bloom, however, is very light and smells like a less soapy version of the typical linen scent. We had used it in the bathroom and the smell was very airy and nice. It reminds me of a perfect spring day; the kind of light and breezy smell that comes in through the open windows when you’re tackling your spring cleaning. The name suits it perfectly.

Finally, to move on from candles, I finished up the Tim Hortons French Vanilla Cappicino. For everyone outside of Canada, I am sorry you haven’t experienced Tim Hortons. It is simply fantastic. Normally, I don’t go for hot beverages but for this (and tea or hot chocolate), I make the exception. I got this December 2013 as a lovely Christmas gift from my beautiful fiancé after buying and buying and buying them at Timmies all winter long. Fantastic for any cold day.

Though I am not a big fan, I went through two make up wipe packs. I never feel like make up wipes really do enough but I do use them as like a first step to get off a bit of makeup before washing my face especially if I am wearing dark lipstick or a lot of foundation. Of everything I’ve tried, these no name looking makeup wipes are my favourite. They are actually the Balea 3 in 1 cleansing wipes which come in a reusable box. There are 56 wipes in a pack which is what attracted me to them in the first place but they are not too wet or too dry and don’t irritate my eyes. They really don’t have a smell and are frequently on sale for under $7 at Shoppers. Perfect!
The second package is the Skyn Iceland wipes which I got in an ipsy bag. They were so weird feeling but overall they worked. They felt kind of stiff and dry but they weren’t. They were also a bit oily but it didn’t effect my skin negatively. I won’t repurchase them because I don’t really care about them all too much.

Speaking of oil, I used up this sample of GLAMGLOW Duel Cleanse mask (which I will have a review of coming soon!) which goes from a clay mask to oil when rinsing it off. Since I will be doing an in depth review in the future, I don’t wanna say too much but it is very different from anything else I’ve tried. My skin usually doesn’t react well with face oils but it felt much more like a serum to me. Stay tuned for an in depth review!

Some more skin care that I have loved is the St. Ives Apricot Scrub. Though I prefer the Green Tea scrub which I use now, this has much larger scrubbing beads that exfoliated well and the smell was lovely. The price is right and I will absolutely be repurchasing this. I can pretty confidentiality say that St. Ives is my most beloved skin care brand from the drug store. I am really interested in trying a few drug store cleansers though once my Murad Essential C cleanser runs out so if you have any suggestions, let me know!

I’ve had his Olay moisturizer for forever, so I thought it was about time to part with it. It wasn’t anything special for my face, but I used it frequently on my dry legs. My legs are pretty sensitive and I can’t use scented lotions on them too often without them stinging or giving me razor burn so I started using this and it worked like a dream. I am sure at this point though, it is expired and does nothing so into the trash she goes!

Another Sephora Nail polish remover was used right up. Since I’ve talked about this before, I won’t go on much, but in case you missed my previous empties post, I love it. I think it was discontinued and I have a few new removers to try and report back on.

This shampoo, I loved. I had it for at least a year and it worked for me until closer to the end. I love the fact that it had the pump to help me control how much to use. 2 pumps and I am good. The formula worked well for my routine and the bottle is huge. I can’t say I noticed extra volume which the bottle claims, but I still enjoyed it. The shampoo I use now is good of course but it feels like I use a lot more than I had to with this. I will miss it but it is time for a change.

And finally, onto the make up. This empties, we have another dried up glitter liner liner. I bought this initially for for prom (almost 5 years ago now) to go with my dress. I am not sure if I ever wore it on prom (I will check for a picture though), but it matched beautifully and I wore it a few times before it dried. This was from Lise Watier which I own nothing else of, but have heard only good things. To go with this, I have the amazing Urban Decay Mascara. It hurt to have to depart with this mascara but it started to get flakey which I took as a sign to ditch. I hope to buy another full or sample size once I use up a few mascaras in my drawer. Lastly is this Fresh Sugar Rose tinted lip balm. Though I do really like these, I have to say they melt in any sort of heat. This one, I took to Cuba with me this year, so I am not shocked, but others have melted while enduring the summer in Canada where it hasn’t been insanely hot. I am guessing it it the metal packaging, but either way, I recommend keeping this in the fridge or cooler if it is hot where you are going.

Finally, we’ve hit the end. I hope that you enjoyed this rather lengthy post! Expect another before the end of January! I am not bringing and trash with me when I move.

December 2014 Favourites & Unfavourites

December went really quickly for me. With all of the holidays, the anticipation of Christmas and finding a new home, there was a lot keeping me busy. When it came time to pick my best beauty products in December, I had a bit of a hard time. I didn’t wear make up too frequently, or buy much for myself as you saw in my haul, but I was able to pick out a few things I loved and a few that I really don’t. I am going to start with the most important thing that happened in December: I got my engagement ring!

My fiancé and I have been engaged for a few years, but since I proposed to her, I hadn’t received a ring of engagement to call my own. I knew I wanted one, and she knew too, so at the beginning of November, she went out and found this gorgeous ring. I won’t go into details, but closer to the end of November, she serenaded me with a beautiful song she wrote for me, and when I turned to look at her, the box was in her hand. I, of course, cried. However, the ring didn’t quite fit so I had to wait several weeks before I actually got to wear it. I picked it up December 14th and it hasn’t left my finger since. Very unique and beautiful, and definently a favourite of mine for the month.

With all of the holidays, my next fav has for sure been glitter. A little glitter here, a little sparkle there. I was completely into it all month long. My manicures all month were soaking in shine though none so much as my Christmas Day nails. How spectacular is that? And to top these nails off, I had the pleasure of using another amazing product: the Sally Hansen Triple Shine Top Coat. The number 1 most perfect thing about this product is that the formula is consistent. Not once has it been kind of gloopy or messy. It dries quickly with a gorgeous shine while protecting your nails to boot. The brush is also huge and can cover just about your entire nail in one swipe. If you haven’t tried one of the Triple Shine polishes, you’re missing out. Simply put, I love it – and the price.

Staying with nails, I want to briefly mention these amazing nail wraps. As you know, OMG Nail Strips had graciously sent me a few wraps to try in December. Not only are they super cute, but the most amazing part to me is how easily you can take them off. Most other nail wraps are sticky and chunky when taking them off – OPI, Sally Hansen, and Essie to name a few – but these are a dream. They come off easily using nail polish remover but otherwise, they last for at least a week and a half. I will absolutely be picking up some more (actually, I am awaiting the arrival of a few…) so this isn’t the last you’ll be seeing of these!

Since the weather has started to take a turn for the chilly, I have been using a lot more lip balm. Though I have about 3-4 on rotation at a time, this one has stood out above the rest. The Lippy Girl Lip Love Lip Conditioning stick is a life saver. I don’t know what it is, but the texture is perfect, the eucalyptus scent is amazing and is so hydrating on my lips. I put it on at least when I wake up and 2-3 times before bed and if I miss a day, you can be sure I notice. Add to the fact that it is organic and cruelty-free, I am sold.

A sample piece of skin care that I have been using has also made the list. If you remember last month (or last year, if you wanna play that game), I rambled on about this Kate Somerville miracle worker and how much I loved it. It turns out that I was able to snag another sample of the HydraClear Hydrating Acne Gel to further test out whether I want to drop so much dough on this skin care product. I still am on the fence because so many reviews have said the sample worked wonders, but the product then disappointed. Yikes. But this little sample is saving my skin one zit at a time. It is not drying in the least, a little goes a long way, and as a spot treatment, it works wonders. My acne simply shows up and once this product goes on, it quickly develops and then disappears. By quickly, I mean overnight or for the really big, bad, painful pimples, after a day or so. It’s an amazing product and if you have the $80 (or can get it on sale), I highly recommend it.

Some of you may judge me for this, but I was never all that into the Harry Potter series. I did see each movie one, some in theatres and some with a few friends on the couch. For the most part, I never really got into them. I just didn’t care for the story. This December though, my fiancé and I decided to sit down and marathon the movies over a few days to get us into the Christmas spirit. Perhaps that is a bit odd, but I quite a few people do this so I don’t feel too weird about it. Anyways, after popping in each movie, getting sucked into the storyline and watching them in succession, I surprised myself in really liking the series. My most beloved one has always been the Chamber of Secrets which may be the only one I had seen more than once (before now), but I completely understand what everyone was so excited about when these books and movies came out. I am so pumped for the next time we decide to watch them. They are just so good!

Last up, we have the make up. I am entirely aware that I am the minority in this case, but my first unfavourite of the month is this Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer. Obviously, I have had it for some time and used it almost entirely, but this month I came to the conclusion that it just isn’t for me. Let’s start with the packaging: it is messy, unhygienic and wasteful. Look at all of that product that I will never be able to use. I don’t know why mine is like that when no one else’s seems to be, but I have two shades of this and the same thing has happened to both. It is annoying. The most complained about thing I have heard about with this product is the applicator sponge. It’s something you have to use each time but you can’t really clean it. That is a little disturbing if you ask me. But the reason that this is in my list of dislikes for the month is because for whatever reason, this concealer has decided it wants to have a pool party on my face. I only use this concealer underneath my eyes and for some reason, it has started to pool and crease and move around throughout the day. It simply doesn’t settle. I have tried several primers and setting powders and different ways to apply it but it just doesn’t seem to want to stay put. How annoying is that?

A newly discovered concealer of mine that has me hooked is this Covergirl Trublend fix stick that I found at the Dollar Store of all places. I always check out the make up aisle at dollar stores because sometimes, they have amazing little gems like this at a great price! I have never been very into Covergirl for whatever reason but this is a game changer. Coverage? Amazing. Colour? Perfect. Consistency? Creamy and thick and soft and supreme. I am in love with this stuff and am now seeking out the foundation to match. It covers all of my acne with ease and any discolouration (as you can see on my vein). I highly recommend giving it a try. You will not be disappointed.

Speaking of disappointed, my last product is a bit of a bummer. I purchased the Bite Beauty lip gloss trio to use for gifts but of course, ended up keeping one for myself. I have a few other Bite products which I haven’t used too much, but have liked. When this $12 set came out, I figured it was a great time to give the gloss a try but the results were less than amazing. It’s just really not for me. I don’t know if it is the colour which doesn’t show much or last on my lips, but the consistency and smell don’t help either. The swatch is pretty pigmented here but on the lips, it just doesn’t do anything for me. It isn’t worth the usual price tag in the slightest. I also found that the bit of colour that is there sinks into lip lines very quickly which isn’t really a look I am going for.

Overall, December was a fantastic month and it has left me very excited to see what 2015 brings. If you have a December or 2014 favourites post, link it below so I can see what I may be missing out on! I love reading about all of the best products out there!

November 2014 Ipsy Bag

The snow is here! Finally, it’s time to get into the Christmas Spirit a little bit more and I know I am really excited! All of the gold and glitter and sparkle of the season perfectly matches the theme of the November Ipsy Bag: Girl Meets Glitter!

Personally, I am thrilled. A little sparkle brightens everything so a full month screams glamour to me. I have to say, I am a little confused as to how some of the products I received fit this theme, but I am still happy with them! Let’s go from biggest to smallest, shall we?

This bag. I am in love with the glitter and the fact that it was created by Forever 21. I didn’t know this until I started to see other reviews pop up, but that’s really neat I think. The only thing that would have made this bag any better would be if the inside was as glowing as the outside.

Moving on to the Marc Anthony Oil of Morocco Argan Oil Volume Shine Hairspray. This is one of the products that I don’t fully understand what that has to do with anything, but I am still happy to get it! I’m a girl that doesn’t frequently buy hair products especially in full size because I pretty much use only 2 things: dry shampoo and heat protector. This will come in handy for those infrequent times I do need a bit of hold. As a little note, I have to say, with one exception, I have loved the hair products I’ve gotten from ipsy.

Next up is one of the best products I received, and it’s the Elizabeth Mott You’re So FINE Eyeliner. The name and packaging on this product are so cute, plus it looks amazing on. Super dark, long wearing and subtle glitz throughout. Love it! One issue which I can easily overlook and that is the smell. It stinks bad. Luckily, you aren’t outing this product under your nose!

Next up, one of my beloved ipsy brands, J. Cat Beauty’s Wonder Lip Paint. Again, not sure where the glitter comes in for this product, but it is amazing. I plan on ordering several more, and then some from J. Cat in the very near future. It does take a little practice if you’re not used to brushing on your lip colour but it’s worth it. Amazing colour for the season.

Then we have the Be A Bombshell Eye Shadow base. I really haven’t been a fan of so many Be A Bombshell products but this one, I can deal with. It’s not overly opaque which I am happy with and it carries some shimmer through it, which looks very cute. I have to say though, I would reach for many other colours and brands before this one.

Last, and technically least, we have the Temptu Highlighter. I am so thrilled to finally have a cool toned highlight. It’s beautiful, and a little goes a long way. It is very watery and really dries quickly leaving a beautiful shine. I couldn’t be happier.

Overall, this bag was much better than last month. I didn’t receive the nail polish again, but I am glad I got to fall in love with a few new products instead.

How to be a Mermaid

My favourite thing about any costume are the small details like, in this case, the nails. Being a huge lover of nail polish, I can’t very well have naked nails on Halloween!
With Halloween fast approaching, I have decided to do tutorials that will add that little extra touch to your costume every Friday in October! As a bonus, I’ve put together some beachy nails that could be used for a mermaid perhaps? You be the judge!
mermaid nails
As a mermaid, you want something light and shiny so immediately, I have the perfect combination in mind: OPI’s The Living Daylights as my sparkle with Sally Hansen’s Dune, Dive In and Debora Lippmann’s Mermaid’s Dream.
OPI's The Living Daylights, Sally Hansen's Dune, Dive In and Debora Lippman's Mermaid's Dream.
As you can see, I used Dune as a base on all of my nails, and on my ring finger, added 2 coats of The Living Daylights. I always have to have an accent nail.
OPI's The Living Daylights with Sally Hansen's Dune
On the rest of my nails, I drew half moons with Dive In first than Mermaids Dream for a bit of extra sparkle.

The colours go together flawlessly and even the names are beachy!

Do you coordinate your nails with your Halloween costume?

What are you doing for Halloween?
