Playing With Lipstick ft Bite Beauty

I am not typically a person who will play around with my lipsticks. I own only a handful of lip liners and my lip real estate isn’t too big. This Valentine’s day, I decided to give it a try.

If there is one thing I do know about lips, it is that they love to be moisturized so I started with this mini Bite Agave Lip Mask. This was my first time trying these particular lip liners and lipsticks so I started simply by lining my lips with the lighter Bite Beauty The Lip Pencil in 20**. This gave me a feel for the creamy formula which has a bit of a satin finish. Following that, I drew a heart with the deeper, red toned brown in the shade 44**. Due to the creamy finish, the colours blended together to create a softer, pinky hue.

To darken both the heart and the rest of my lips, I used the coorisponding lipsticks from Bite Beauty in the Amouse Bouche formula in Honeycomb** and Whiskey**.

To finish it off, I threw a Bite Beauty gloss on top (my favourite shade in Honey) of Whiskey for some extra dimension and voila: my Valentine’s day lip!

Since this isn’t exactly wearable, i mixed it all together to create one of my favourite lip colours: A mauve-grey gorgeous colour.

I hope you enjoyed my lippie look! I loved creating a design that ended up meshing together so well. That just shows the creamy nature of the formula.

Pastel Lipsticks for Spring

Pastel coloured lipstick can go one of two ways: They are either way so light that you look a little bit like a corpse or you look extra tanned and bronzed like a goddess. Since I’ve recently discovered a new fave pastel pink, I thought I would share a few that I love that make me feel pretty awesome. Added bonus, they are cruelty-free!

From lightest to darkest, we have

Essense Lipstick in Get The Look which is a rather sheer but very cool toned pastel pink. This looks best over a darker lip liner as a highlighted pop of colour.

Cargo Cosmetics lipgloss in Anguilla which is the truest baby pastel pink of the group but it is a seriously beautiful colour for spring/summer.

Marcelle Rouge Xpression lipstick in French Rose** is one I talked about pretty recently. This is a slightly frosty blue toned pink that again looks good for a little pop of colour with a slightly more neutral lip liner.

Essence Liquid Lipstick in Colour Party is one of my newest favourites. This is a colour you can wear on its own that is still very light and bright. It isn’t matte – in fact none of these are – so you also get a lovely glossy look for Summer.

NYX Butter Gloss in Apple Strudel is a bit more peachy and sheer, but again gives you a beautiful pinky gloss for this season.

Essense Lipstick in Wear Berries! is more of a pastel purple shade. Since it is quite sheer but dark, it’s a little more subtle then the others but still lovely.

This one is a bit of a stretch but I wanted to include it in here as another option. Too Faced Melted Fig is a very unique kind of colour. Though it is a deep purple colour, it is a similar concept as Essense Wear Berries. It is a nice wash of colour that mixes very well with any of the lighter shades I mentioned earlier.

Through there are no mattes to be found here, there are a few different finishes and types of lip products giving you a pretty good selection to choose from. Onto the lip swatches, but this time, by type.

The formulas, through different, are all pretty outstanding. Let me know what your favourite pastel coloured lipsticks are or perhaps your spring go-to shades. I would love to hear any suggestions!

Marcelle Rouge Xpression Lipstick

This review is long overdue. I am here today to look at a line of stunning classic lipsticks that totally make an impact. Several months ago, Marcelle sent me a few of their new Marcelle Rouge Xpression lipsticks** to try and at first glance, I was a little intimidated. They are very bright and bold. To me, they scream spring. So here we are, with spring in bloom (well, not really) and I have been testing these lovely ladies out for you.

The packaging itself is sophisticated and sleek but easily damaged (you may be able to see the scratch marks on the matte black from them being in my bag). They look a little bit similar to the NARS Audacious lippies but since I have never tried any from NARS, I can’t say whether or not they are dupes.

Regardless, they stand out. The three shades I have are extremely pigmented with a cream finish similar to most lipsticks. They seem to be consistent and feel lovely on the lips.  They also end up being pretty true in colour from the bullet to the swatch to the tag on the end of the lipstick. Online, they are a little darker.

French Rose is the lightest of the three. It is a bright baby pink shade. I tend to have problems with this type of shade but with a lip liner, it works much better. There is a little bit of a frosty look to it as well but that could just be me!

Vivid Coral is exactly that: a beautiful and vivid coral shade. It is bold but not too crazy and actually, I have nothing even similar to this!

Fuchsia Flare is my favourite of the three. It is a berry-like fuchsia that is super easy to wear. As you can see, it comes off kind of light bit still very colourful.

I don’t think I could say one bad thing about these lipsticks and that includes the price ($12 approx per lipstick).

One swipe of colour each. From L to R: 825 French Rose, 970 Vivid Coral, 880 Fuchsia Flare.

There is a large variety of shades for every skintone. If you haven’t already, try these out! Marcelle is a cruelty-free Canadian brand which I love and support.

NYC Expert Last Lipsticks

Hey all! I’m here with more budget beauty and I think it’s about time I reviewed and swatched the NYC Expert Last lippies in full. These are an astonishing $2 most places you go and have a wide variety of shades. I have four here that I love but this is certainly not all there is.

I’m going to start with my biggest complaint. These are not a long lasting lip colour by any means. They might last for two hours, they will not last you a meal or even a drink in some cases, and it leaves you with a bit of colour just on the outline of your lips so when you wear these, keep a mirror handy and make sure you take the shade with you wherever you’re going. The packaging is yet another con with these but it’s expected when it comes to that inexpensive price tag. The silver writing on the packaging scratches off pretty easily, it feels cheap and I don’t now if this is a flaw in design, packaging or user error, but I always get lipstick on the lid. With a clear lid like this, it looks a little ugly. Onto the good things:

Air Kiss is a hot pink, no ifs ands or butts.

Creamy Caramel is a beautiful brown nude.

Blue Rose is a bold fuchsia shade with a blue sheen to it.

Pure Coral is a bright coral colour.

The colours are definitely bold and beautiful. They look and feel awesome on the lips for things like pictures or maybe when you’re out shopping. I have worn these to work (8-10 hours) but have to reapply constantly. They do transfer and do travel a bit if you’re not careful but all of this is pretty easily maintained.

Do I recommend these? I think they are worth their price, take that as you will. It all depends on what you’re looking for. I like owning these and I want to collect them all but I only wear them when I am ready to maintain them. What do you think of these lipsticks?

On Fridays, We Wear Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the perfect time to support the men and women out there going through this critical illness. I have known a few cancer survivors but even more victims of this terrible disease and it’s time for that to change.
Today is all about supporting those who need it and I wanted to do it in the funnest way I can: by wearing pink. Dress for the Cause is today! If you don’t know what it is, it is basically a day of raising awareness, donating and fundraising for Breast Cancer research and I have participated for several years (at work). Since I am a make up addict, I do have some pinks in my make up collection and what a better time to share. In times of darkness, sometimes all you need is that little bit of pep and bright pink.

For the lips, I have Chatterbox and Girl About Town from MAC for the most opaque and beautiful pink I can manage. I must confess, I am not one for a plain pink lip. I prefer plums, oranges and nudes, but every so often, a pink comes out. Something a tad more subtle would be the Rimmel Moisture Renew lipstick in Piccadilly Pink or Oxford Street Fuchsia. I hate the taste of these but they are so comfortable to wear and look beautiful. Find me on Snapchat (newkeybeauty) to see my #motd for today using one of these lippies!

I almost forgot to include these fantastic waterproof lip liners from Annabelle and Marcelle. I have a few of these and they last so well on the lips through everything. This is the Annabelle Stay Sharp liner in Strike a Rose** and the Marcelle Forever Sharp liner in Coral Pink**. They are always sharp for the most precision you can get. On top of any of these pinks, I like the NYX Butter Gloss in Apple Strudel. These are super comfortable though a little thick sometimes.

Pink blushes are more my speed and I have a variety to share. I have some issues with blush lasting on my cheeks so I am going to recommend the ones I have that really stick for me. First off, the Too Faced Love Flushed blush in How Deep Is Your Love? sticks to my skin like glue. This colour goes on easily and I really love the colour. A more recent discovery for me was the L’Oreal True Match blush in C1-2 which isn’t really my shade (I am a W1-2 girl), but I still love the colour on me and it also stays put during the day. A final blush I 110% recommend is the Physicians Formula blush in Light Nude. This is the most natural blush of the three but man, it is a perfect kiss of colour that stays.

I don’t have a whole lot of pink in my eyeshadow collection because it isn’t the most flattering colour, but these two from Make Up For Ever are a different story. Extreme pigment, huge pan (you could probably even use it for blush) and the colour is cool toned enough that it doesn’t make you look ill. As a base, I also have the Hard Candy Fierce Effects eye pigment from the Lost and Found duo and the L’Oreal Infallible pigment in Always Pearly Pink which are both quite shimmery and gorgeous.
Though it itself isn’t pink, the packaging is so I thought I would throw it in. The Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara is just an A+ mascara. I am addicted to it but I am sure you’ve heard all about it already. A little clumpy, but super black, super length, great volume; simply a beautiful product.

For nail polish, I dug deep into my collection and found a pink I don’t think I have shown before. This is the L’Oreal 2 step nail polish in Keep Magenta. I have already used up the Step 2 top coat before I knew you were supposed to use the two together for an extra boost of colour (makes sense since the top coat was kind of pink). Oops. It’s still a lovely pink without the top coat anyways!
That’s my pretty in pink round up for today and my reminder to check your tatas! Early detection saves lives but I know there are way too many people out there that don’t take preventative measures – even ones so simple. That’s my PSA for today!

All About Neon Lips

Lips are a tricky thing to play with colour on. I find that my lipstick choice is what dictates whether I will look crazy or washed out or gorgeous. When it comes to the brights, I always lean towards the more ‘normal’ shades like pinks, reds, purples, and oranges.

Let’s start with the Revlon Colorburst Matte Lip Balms which I have reviewed (in fact, it was one of my first ever posts) back in September. The two I have my eye on for the sunny, summer months are Unapologetic and Showy. Unapologetic is a bright, neon pink. The finish is very matte and screams summer. Showy is more of a light blue toned purple but I find it flattering on myself. It might even make me look tanned.

Another one of my go to lipstick formulas are the NYC Expert Last lipsticks. They don’t last very long as their name might suggest, but they are inexpensive, come Ina million colours, and feel amazing. The two I have here are Air Kiss and Pure Coral. Air Kiss is a pure hot pink with a glossy finish. Pure Coral is a bright coral red which I have been very obsessed with as you saw in my May Favourites.

My final two picks are a few high end options from MAC and Buxom. My MAC pick is a classic called Girl About Town. It is a slightly darker hot pink than my NYC pick and a much matter formula. Pucker Up from Buxom is a somewhat pigmented gloss in a very bright blue toned purple. This is fantastic for mixing with Showy to make an amazing lip look.

Flare Beauty Box – June 2015

I had pretty much given up on boxes after my last Ipsy bag. I was no longer interested in receiving brands I didn’t care about, or small samples or paying $16-17 for a bag of sample goodies, when I could buy a full sized product I really wanted.

However, I stumbled across this Flare Beauty Box from a blogger through Twitter and was intrigued. You pay $9 for quite a few samples and full sized drugstore products. No shipping, and with tax, it was little over $10. I quite like that they tell you exactly when you’re getting and that there are multiple boxes to choose from. This month, there were two $9 boxes: the Classic and the Fearless with a slight variation of products as well as other pricier boxes with many more samples including those from The Balm, Estée Laudier and Bobbi Brown. Since I was new to this and am trying to save a bit, I stayed in the $9 range and picked the Fearless box.

You get two full sized Covergirl products, a few Olay and Herbal Essences products and a hair product coupon worth $16.99. This box is great for those about to travel or, like me, give a product I haven’t heard of but might be very interested in a try (such as the Olay Fresh Effects Swirled Mattifier). Let’s talk about that first!

Firstly, there are two sample foil packets of the Olay Fresh Effects Swirled Mattifier. Though it is a small sample, you do get to test it twice before deciding whether to pursue it further. I have tried it once and honestly, saw no difference in my skin. My hope was that it would be a cheaper alternative to the Murad Mattifier that I love so much, but it doesn’t look that way!

An item that I really would never use is the Vidal Sassoon Hair Colour Product coupon. I am 100% anti-hair dye for myself. Too much maintenance, too much damage and I like my hair colour quite a bit. However, my fiance is not opposed to dying her hair and so this wont go to waste! It is a coupon for 1 free VS product with a max value of $16.99. That’s a pretty good deal!

Now for the slightly larger samples, we have a 50 mL body wash and 100 mL shampoo and conditioner combo. Perfect little travel companions for anyone going away this summer. The body wash is another Olay product: the Ultra Moisture with Shea Butter Body Wash. I believe I have tried this before and don’t mind it. The shampoo and conditioner combo are Herbal Essences Wild Naturals Rejuvenating duo with Turkish Fig Essences which I have not tried before. These two samples will give me a really good idea about whether I like the products or not and are a welcome addition to my collection (since I don’t particularly like my current shampoo and don’t often use conditioner).

Saving the best for last, we have two full sized CoverGirl products. My relationship with CoverGirl has been pretty love hate, more so leaning on the side of hate. I almost never try their products anymore because of one too many disappointments but thought it was time to give them another chance. In this box came a CoverGirl Full Lash Bloom mascara in Black. I am not a fan of the bristles on this brush but again, I will give it a try. The CoverGirl Colorlicious Lipstick in Succulent Cherry came in the box as well. This red lippie is the perfect classic red. I haven’t tried the formula before, so I am very pumped to give it a go!

That is the box in its entirety. I am new to this Flare Beauty Box but hope that next month, there will be another jam packed drugstore box to try out!
