#MOTD: Silver & Gold🎶

Most people would think of greens and reds when you’re talking about Christmas, but I wanted to do something a little different this year and draw inspiration from my favourite Christmas Tune: Silver and Gold. I am all kinds of nostalgic about that little tune.

But other than simply loving the song, I thought I would challenge myself to come up with different ways to incorporate the two shades. I’ve gotta say I’m pretty pleased with the result! Would I wear this to my family Christmas dinner? Probably not. That doesn’t make me love it any less.

For the products, I love that I was able to use so many favourites of mine while doing something different than I usually do. I was also able to use products I haven’t had the chance to wear yet like NYX Stone Fox which is so much better than I thought it would be! For anyone keeping track, I was able to do silver shadow and lips, and gold liner and highlight. My blush also has some gold sparkle to it of course. This look is also almost entirely drugstore products!

The Palette Tag

Hey all! I’ve seen this little tag floating around the beauty community and tough I don’t remember if I was tagged (let me know if I was and I am simply forgetting), I thought it would be a whole lot of fun to do anyway.  Continue reading “The Palette Tag”

#MOTD: Smokey Plum

Hey all! We’ve been over this a few times now, but I am obsessed with the colour purple. Lately, my make up has been quite tame but I am very ready to step out of that little box of nudes, tans, browns and champagnes I have been in all summer and into fall and break out the plums and burnt oranges and evergreens I have been mesmerized by lately.

A few weeks ago, I had mentioned doing a plum smokey eye using the Lorac Pro 2 and Tarte Rainforest After Dark palettes and I would say it’s about time I did it. I am not 100% confident in these dark eye looks on me but I still love to play around with looks like this to try them out.

Eye shadow primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer

Eye shadow: Tarte Rainforest After Dark palette and Lorac Pro 2 palette

Eye liner: Jesse’s Girl Black liquid liner and Urban Decay 24/7 eye liner in Zero

Mascara: Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara

Primer: Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting primer

Foundation: L’Oreal True Match Foundation in W2

Concealer: Maybelline Coverstick Concealer in Green, Covergirl True Blend Concealer in Light and Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in Fair

Powder: Bare Minerals Well Rested and Rimmel Stay Matte Translucent Powder

Brows: Quo brow powder/wax in Brunette and Benefit Gimmie Brow in Light

Blush: Tarte Unleashed

Highlight: Tarte Champagne

Lips: Marcelle Forever Sharp lip liner in Coral Pink** and Annabelle Twist Up Lipstick in Romance**.

I primed my lids before going in with Tatre Bare To Explore (light pink) & Lorac Beige all over the lid. To smoothly transition, I threw some Tarte Tan-goes Up In You (light tan brown) in the crease. Then blend blend blend. I added some Lorac Nectar in the crease and outter corner then finally Lorac Plum on top. Then blend blend blend again. I incorporated the Tarte Plum Away With Me by pressing it onto the lid and reapplied the Lorac Beige to the inner corner to brighten.

It looked incomplete without adding a little something to my bottom lash line so I smoked a black liner out with some Tarte Plum Away With Me. Some eye liner and mascara and these eyes are done! It’s worth noting that I also used the Annabelle EyeInk 2 corrector** to tidy up my eye liner. Man, that is handy.

Is two eye shadow palettes for one look a little excessive? Yes. Do I love it anyway? Yes. Totally excited about how these eyes turned out and am so happy to play with colour again. I hope you like the look as much as I do and let me know if there is anyting else you’re itching to see.

Plum Away With Me

Tomorrow is OFFICIALLY Autumn and as you may know, it is my favourite season. The colours, the fresh start, the leaves, no bees, but it’s only sweater weather. Have I mentioned how much I love sweaters? Anyway, with Fall also comes one of my favourite colours and that is plum. On the lips, cheeks or eyes, I am simply obsessed. I have picked out the best plums in my collection just in case you need some inspiration or convincing that you need this colour this season. It’s ah-may-zing.

(Same order as above)
My favourite way to wear plum is on the lips. Two of these made their way into last years Purple Lips for Fall post and rightfully so. Each of them has a bit of a different finish and tone to them. First, Lady and the Vamp from Wet n Wild in their Megaslick formula. This is a very sheer but buildable wash of dark plum with a glossy finish. It is a very purple plum shade so it is a little harder to wear, but when it’s sheer, it brings out some of the pinky reds in your lips. If you want to go really bold, it also looks amazing over a black lipstick, just saying.

For a bit more colour, there is the Maybelline Color Whisper in Berry Ready. I don’t find this as easy to build, but you do get more colour in your first swipe than you do with the WnW Megaslick lippie. It is also a lot more red-toned which I feel suites my pale skin a little bit better though they both suite their purpose. For a lot of glossy plum pigment, there is the Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain in 005 Parisian. I know I will be wearing this consecutively between now and spring because it is the perfect vampy lip shade for me. I wont go on and on because I know this will be making its way into all of my selfies and make up looks this season so keep an eye out.

To give any of these lippies a bit more staying power and a bit more colour, I have the Annabelle Stay Sharp waterproof lip liner in the shade Berry. Like Lady and the Vamp, it is not as red-toned but more of a purple plum so it darkens up any of the colours I have already mentioned (and looks phenomenal). I have had such good luck with the Stay Sharp lip, eye and brow liners from Annabelle and I totally urge you to check them out if you can.

Now that you are set for lip products, I have a few cream cheek colours to try. First, there is Colourpop’s Super Shock Cheek in Pegacorn. It is not quite as scary on the cheek as it is in the pan and blends away to be a beautiful pink flush of colour. I always recommend using a duo fiber brush when working with a cream blush to give you the most natural finish. Between the two plums, I prefer the Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in the shade Plum Wine. It is exactly what it claims to be: a plum wine combination that does show pretty true when applied on the cheek. I love the formula of these blushes because of how easy they are to use and blend.

For eyes, I went the high end route and grabbed out two palettes that I think will be perfect for Fall this year: the Tarte Rainforest After Dark and the Lorac Pro 2. Both of these have beautiful deep plum shades but each one is different. Though I have barely touched the Tarte palette as I bought it specifically with Autumn in mind, I have tested out these shades and am so in love. It is an all-in-one spread of deep, warm shadows plus a blush, highlight and bronzer that blend together beautifully. Plum Away With Me is the light pinky-plum in this palette and it has a beautiful gold shimmer throughout. In the Lorac palette, Plum is super matte and another dark purple plum. Both shades are beautiful and even go together quite well for a purple smokey eye.

Last but not least, I have a nail polish that I totally fell in love with but have heard nothing about. This is Get Cherried Away from the OPI Coca-Cola Collection. It’s bright but deep and so, so smooth. I feel like it totally breaks up all of the dark colours I know I will be wearing this fall. Two coats of this and you’re set with a beautiful pop of colour. Can we just all obsess over this?

All  are sure to make their way into tutorials this season (in fact, one as soon as Friday…). Let me know what your favourite plums are for the fall and be sure to check out even more plum options here.

What’s Worth the Splurge?

I am a lover of high end make up. It all started with the opening of Sephora at the local mall. I went on a trip with my old co-worker (@Spiffykerms, if you know her) and she bought me a Nails Inc nail polish. That’s where it all began. I started going more and more and then when I finally started wearing make up every day, that’s exactly where I turned to for some new products.Over the past 2-3 years or however long it’s been, I have tried my share of products and have a roundup of products that I feel are totally worth their price. In this post, there are two products that were sent to me, but as you will see, I will or have picked up more myself because they really are that good.

I always like to start with nails. They are my favourite beauty product after all. If you know me, you know that I 100% recommend OPI. Formula, perfect. Colours, amazing, Glitters, glamorous. Names, punny. They are about mid-range price point (below Formula X, Butter London, Deborah Lippmann) but more than your average drugstore polish (Revlon, Sally Hansen, Covergirl). I have a few colours here to show off the fantastic payoff and selection in case you haven’t seen them before. Viking in a Vinter Vonderland, Snow Globetrotter, I Just Can’t Cope-acabana, The Sky’s My Limit.

Highlighters are the one thing I always splurge on. I am all about the dramatic disco-ball highlight and so far, I haven’t seen inexpensive alternatives for these two. The cult classic, Mary-Lou Manizer (which you will see had a tragic accident) by the Balm is sold at Shoppers for around the $30-$40 mark and is everything you could want in a super intense champagne highlight. For a slightly less dramatic, but still noticeable highlight, there is the Too Faced Candlelight Glow which is a newbie of mine. It’s totally buildable and can look quite natural (though that’s not how I wear it). It is really just the perfect sheen to add to any make up look.

For concealer, nothing beats this Lise Watier Corrector Wheel I picked up back in April. I believe this is a Canadian brand that is sold at Shoppers as well for around the $30 mark. There are 5 creamy concealers and boy, do they pack a punch. On my worst dark-circle days, I use Ivory with the Ecotools Eye Perfecting brush to completely hide how much sleep I didn’t get. You can also contour and correct any redness or dullness, both of which I have. It is an all in one product that I really never want to go without.

A few skincare splurges that are worth a mention are the Vichy Normaderm Night Detox lotion and the GLAMGLOW Supermud clearing treatment. I use this mask like it doesn’t cost the $76. It doesn’t smell great, you don’t get a whole lot, it is really expensive but it works extremely well to pull out imperfections and tighten the pores on your face just about instantly. Let me know if you’re interested in before/after shots or a full on review! For the Vichy lotion (my holy grail acne fighting moisturizer), I think I have said enough in the many favourites and reviews so I will just leave this here if you want to know more. It is $29 at Shoppers and beats every other acne fighting product I have tried (plus moisturizes while you sleep).

Everyone owns and loves at least one of the many MAC lipstick shades and finishes. I own Flat Out Fabulous (Retro Matte), Chatterbox (Amplified), Girl About Town (Amplified) and the LE Frank-N-Furter (Matte) from the Rocky Horror collection. I don’t think there is much to say except they feel, smell and look great. What more could you ask for? For lip gloss however, I love a totally different brand. I received the Make Up For Ever lip gloss D16 in the Fifty Shades of Gray trio that came out in the winter and it totally changed my mind about gloss. To me, lip gloss is uncomfortable, sticky, thick, very lightly pigmented if there is any colour at all. the MUFE Lab Shine lippies are not like that at all. You’ll see that they aren’t overly pigmented but the colour is buildable and they are extremely comfortable and flattering on the lips. I later picked up M10 which confirmed my love for the formula. Are the Pixi glosses similar? I don’t know but if you do, let me know! I haven’t given them a try because I am just so in love with these.

I am on a big Lorac Pro 2 kick ever since picking the palette up at the end of July. even though it has only been a short time, I can confidently say they are my favourite eye shadows. Blendable and beautiful with a lovely shade selection. Just look at the swatches and tell me they aren’t amazing? You can see the quality. With this and every other eye shadow I own, I use the Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer. I have oily eyelids so a primer is essential to keeping things in check and this applies so smoothly. The full size (which this is not) is $24 and it lasts months and months and months.

If eyeliner is your thing, here is a super black, super matte bombshell: the Make Up For Ever Ink Liner. It took me a little time to get used to the applicator (I am more of a pen liner pro) but the intensity and super matte formula sold me. I did receive this product for review but once it runs out, I am running out to buy another. It stays all day and looks phenomenal. A fun, not so essential but absolutely beautiful product if you haven’t tried it already is the Marc Jacobs Twinklepop eye shadow sticks. They glide on smoothly and feel almost wet as you apply them. Once on, you have the most beautiful glittering glow. I wear this under eye shadows to add some extra pop or on its own to make a subtle statement. They are quite expensive but if you have the extra $35 to spend, you won’t be disappointed. The colour I have is Honey Bunny and I am really trying to debate on what colour to pick up next!

I know that was quite the list but I think I have touched on everything that I use all the time and love endlessly. Most of these products are in the $30 price range where I would consider a single product expensive, but all of these babies are worth it. I would love to know what high end or luxury products you love too!

July 2015 Favourites & Unfavourites

July is just about over and with all of the shopping I did towards the end of the month, I have a few favourite and unfavourite products I wanted to share.

Roxy picked up a product from the Dollar Tree of all places called the Oxy Natural Action Oil Absorbing lotion. It claims to remove, refresh, restore, replenish your skin and let me tell you, it really did. I have tried a million things to reduce oil but nothing has worked so instantly as this has. It was only $1.25, but my understanding is that it was about $10-$11 for 60 mL. This thing is a miracle which naturally means it has been discontinued. I was so upset to find that out, but luckily, the Dollar Tree by my house had 3 more bottles that I was able to purchase before it was too late.

I have two face washes here: the Equate Pink Grapefruit Foaming Acne Scrub and the Ole Henriksen African Red Tea foaming cleanser. I do not like the Equate cleanser because it’s so drying. However, the Ole Henriksen cleanser may be the one. Review coming very soon!

If you saw my USA haul, two products really stood out above the rest for me and so I had to include them dispite the fact I only had them for about 1/4th of the month. The Lorac Pro 2 palette is exquisite in texture and pigmentation for most of the shades and there is a good variety of colour to play with even for a girl who is not so into neutrals. The second product is the beautiful Too Faced Candlelight Glow highlighter which was once raved about on YouTube. It was totally worth they hype I had heard at least. It is not natural or dramatic, it is simply the perfect glow that feels like silk when you apply it. It is simply wonderful.

I am not overly shocked that I didn’t get along with the Laura Mercier Protection Primer. Though I love the SPF, it just made me a oily mess by the end of the day and I am glad it’s gone. I would totally recommend this to someone that likes a dewy finish but doesn’t really require much in a primer other than some moisture and SPF. That is just not me!

This product is totally new. The Brow This Way gel by Rimmel is the best eyebrow gel I have ever used! Colour: perfect, texture: crunchy, application: easy.

I am 90% sure this has been in my favourites before but I don’t care. This is the Rimmel (again) Scandaleyes Volume Flash mascara. The wand is huge and gets every lash coated. It gives my lashes so much length, it’s unreal.

Roxy also picked me up this beautiful orange polish from China Glaze earlier this year knowing how much I love the colour. I am wearing it right now (as you can see) and it is such a beautiful, bright pop of colour. I will be checking out more of their polish in the future.

I have included this before but I once again don’t care. It’s awesome. This month, I was able to pick up two of the COLAB dry shampoos in Rio and Paris. They work to invisibly clean, volumize, texturize and freshen my hair way better than anything else. They are wonderful and only about $8. What more could you ask for?

I hope you enjoyed hearing about what I loved this July! Many of these will be in upcoming posts so you can see swatches and full reviews. What have you been reaching for lately?
