Spring Flings 2017

Yes, I am super late to the game on this one (as it is now officially summer) but I thought it was worth sharing anyway. Things have been busy over here between helping with my cousin’s wedding, big changes at work, and enjoying the beautiful weather. That being said, this Spring seems to have really made me fall back in love with make up, nails, and blogging, so I have a few of my absolute favourites to talk about today.

Spring-fling-All

NYX Liquid Suede in Stone Fox
I have been having a hard time getting out of the winter dark lipstick trend, have you? I have mainly been reaching for cool toned shades whether it is a deep purple hue or this gorgeous grey from NYX. These do transfer, which is the only bummer, but the formula is comfortable and is still flattering as it wears away. I find this easy to apply and reapply on-the-go despite it being a darker shade. All in all, this unique shade is amazing and I recommend it if you ‘re into funkier lipsticks.

Kat Von D Shade and Light Eye Palette
I have been going pretty light and neutral on the eyes lately and so this is my go-to palette hands down. These Kat Von D shadows are pigmented, blendable and powdery which is exactly what I look for in an eye shadow. Though these are natural, neutral nudes, there is still a heap of variety in this palette which makes it fun and inspiring. Even when I am feeling like a pop of colour, I can use this palette as a base before going for one of my colourful palettes or single shadows. It pretty much goes with anything.

Spring-fling-1

Beyond the Nail Polish in Supernova with Starrily Menchie the Cat Nail Polish
I am currently all about holographic nails and so this combination gives me so much life. The pink hues work well together and depending on the lighting, you have a lovely rainbow glow that lasts. Both polishes easy to apply with a smooth formula and are cruelty-free so I recommend trying them out if you haven’t already.

Nars Radient Creamy Concealer in Vanilla
I don’t think I need to go on about this concealer as I have before just like so many others. This concealer just makes your undereye area look smooth and bright while being comfortable and (relatively) creaseless. Although this has definitely been in favourites before, I thought I would mention a little hack that I had learned that is quick and easy to get more from your product. I recommend only doing this when you’re running low on concealer, but when the time comes, remove the little device that removes excess product from your brush. It can easily be removed with tweezers and allows you to dig for more product along the sides.

The Honest Company Deodorant in Bergamot Sage
My new favourite deodorant: the Spray On deodorant. If you haven’t tried a spray deodorant, I recommend it. This one from The Honest Company in particular lasts all day without the feeling of product on your pits. It is lightweight with a bit of an earthy scent (as it is bergamot sage) and it lasts for quite a while. It is natural and cruelty free without the use of coconut oil (which breaks me out and is also in many natural stick deodorants).

ecotools muslin Polishing Cloths
Special mention, though it isn’t pictured here, are the Ecotools Muslin Polishing cloths. These are the gentlest way I have found to wash my face. I plan write an entire post about the various ways I use these to save time, money and being less wasteful (so stay tuned) but they are all I plan to use from now on to clean my skin.

#MOTD: Something Old, Something New

And no, this isn’t another wedding post.

Inspired by Beauty With Emily Fox on YouTube, I took a look through my old favourites from the past few years that I have been blogging and put them to the test to see what I still liked and what was just a phase. Where does the ‘something new’ come in? I had to fill in the gaps with some of my current favourites from my collection. Enjoy!

Bare Minerals Prime Time Foundation Primer Original (January 2016)

This primer is still as lovely as ever. I wouldn’t say it is my number 1 primer as I do find that my skin can look a little dry and my pores are still a little bit visible, but I have kept it because I love how it feels on the skin.

Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless foundation in 110 Porcelain (January 2016)

My favourite thing about this foundation is the colour match. Other than that, I wouldn’t say this is gives me either a matte or poreless finish and it doesn’t feel great on my skin. I no longer support the company as it isn’t cruelty-free but regardless, I am not in love with this product anymore.

Hard Candy Glamoflauge Heavy Duty Concealer (February/March 2015 and again in October 2015)

For inexpensive and full coverage, I don’t think you can beat this. It does separate a little and the packaging isn’t ideal, but I do like how this looks under the eyes.

NYX Rouge Cream Blush in Glow (August 2015)

This was my wedding day blush so you know it is still my number 1. I love how this blush gives life to my skin with a bit of a glow without the oil slick. I prefer cream blushes and find that this one is one of the more pigmented with fantastic staying power.

elf HD Undereye Setting Powder and Tone Correcting Powder (CURRENT)

I am blown away that I haven’t raved about these two inexpensive, cruelty-free powders. I rarely will use anything else. They both set my make up well without oxidizing or drying out my skin. They are easy to use and apply, and keep my oily skin under control. I do need to touch up through the day (I use blotting papers to do so) but these look and feel so good.

Too Faced Candlelight Glow Highlighter (July 2015)

That glow though. I still love this highlighter. It has a gorgeous, healthy shine to it while being a good balance of natural and glamourous.

Annabelle Skinny Brow Liner in Universal Medium (pictured is Universal Taupe – January 2016)

This is my go-to and it is drugstore. I am constantly using these up and repurchasing them. If there is one item you try from this post, it should be this.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance (February/March 2015)

This is another product that I use every day and have multiple backups of. It is my favourite eye primer because of how smooth it feels on the lids and how beautifully pigment sticks to it.

March Jacobs Twinkle Pop in Honey Bunny (February/March 2015 and again in December 2015)

This isn’t quite an every day product for me, but when I need a pop of glossy, glittery shine, this is the only thing I reach for. I set this with a few shades in the ABH MR palette (next) here but the cream shadow still shines through. It is simply gorgeous.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette (Fall 2016)

Who doesn’t love this palette? It has so many warm tones, a good variety of colour and neutrals, and the formula is simply one of the best.

Annabelle Stay Sharp Metallic eyeliner in Bronzy (September 2015)

This entire range of Stay Sharp products from Annabelle are 100% worth checking out. I have loved everything I have tried. This particular shade is my favourite because it works so well with my eye colour, but they all stay put and are easy to apply.

Marcelle Double Precision Liquid Liner (CURRENT)

I forgot how much I am in love with this matte, drugstore liner. It is easy to apply and pigmented. I don’t know how I haven’t mentioned this one before either because it has been a favourite since highschool.

Buxom Lash Mascara (CURRENT)

This is a super dark, lengthening mascara that doesn’t disappoint. If you are not a fan of the Too Faced BTS mascara because it is clumpy, here is your not-so-clumpy dupe (to clarify, I do love them both).

Bite High Pigment Pencil in Madeira (May 2015)

This shade isn’t available but I am sure Bite has a similar shade in their permanent collection. Bite specializes in lip products so of course, they are amazing. The one and only issue I have is the wear time but honestly, they feel so lovely to apply that I don’t mind.

Make Up For Ever Lab Shine Lip Gloss in D16 (January 2015)

This lip gloss line is no longer available but luckily, I have found a new favourite that is pretty similar and there is no surprise, it is from Bite. The Bite Lush Fruit Lip Gloss line is the same thick and glossy shine that lasts which is what I loved about the MUFE gloss.

I hope you enjoyed this blast from the past – I know I did! Let me know which ones you’ve tried.

#MOTD: Monochrome First Impressions

I decided to go grey with this look but the real purpose of this whole thing was to try out a new foundation product: the LA Girl Pro Coverage HD long wear Illuminating foundation in White. First of all, that name is ridiculous. Already, this foundation is trying to be way more than I need and/or want. All I really need in a white foundation is for it to mesh well with whatever foundation I am going to mix it with, and that it sits well on my skin.

img_9395_fotor

I mixed this foundation with the Rimmel Lasting Finish 25 hour Skin Perfecting full coverage foundation in Light Porcelain (the lightest shade Rimmel offers) which is also a tad too pink for me but I thought I would try it anyway. The two foundations did mix well and ultimately, the foundation did lighten up. The undertone didn’t completely change, but I do think it neutralized it a little bit and the foundation didn’t oxidize as much.

The one thing I didn’t love about this foundation (though it could be the mixture) was how thick it ended up looking on my face. You can absolutely see that I am wearing foundation and how textured my skin is. It is easy to wear too much foundation when lightening a product too because you’re typically using double what you would usually use since you’re using two shades. On it’s own, it does blend well and can be used for so many things: Halloween, an eyeshadow primer, lighten a foundation or concealer, etc.

A few other things to mention about the product itself is the price, smell and the pump. I love the pump, as most people do, but the packaging is on the cheaper side so it isn’t always the easiest pump to use and control. The foundation is also thin and the combination of those two means a potential mess if you’re in a rush. As for the scent, it is similar to the Essence Pure Nude foundation. It is not exactly a bad smell, but it is pretty chemically and it lingers a little bit. It honestly reminds me of some kind of food that I can’t put my finger on (maybe pancake batter). It isn’t the cheapest foundation I have purchased at around the $10 mark, but it is going to last quite a while since I will mostly be using it to mix with other foundations.

Overall, I am happy I picked it up. I am excited to try it out with some of my darker foundations and concealers. I now have a way to use my foundations all year round if I choose and I can try foundations that don’t have a shade light enough for me typically. I recommend picking this up if you find it hard to find a foundation match or if you are simply curious like I was.

#MOTD: Silver & Gold🎶

Most people would think of greens and reds when you’re talking about Christmas, but I wanted to do something a little different this year and draw inspiration from my favourite Christmas Tune: Silver and Gold. I am all kinds of nostalgic about that little tune.

But other than simply loving the song, I thought I would challenge myself to come up with different ways to incorporate the two shades. I’ve gotta say I’m pretty pleased with the result! Would I wear this to my family Christmas dinner? Probably not. That doesn’t make me love it any less.

For the products, I love that I was able to use so many favourites of mine while doing something different than I usually do. I was also able to use products I haven’t had the chance to wear yet like NYX Stone Fox which is so much better than I thought it would be! For anyone keeping track, I was able to do silver shadow and lips, and gold liner and highlight. My blush also has some gold sparkle to it of course. This look is also almost entirely drugstore products!

Tips for a Dark, Smokey Eye

I don’t typically love how I look with a dark eye shadow on. My eyes end up looking rather small and my skin doesn’t seem to look as nice. I am much less confident. That being said, I also love experimenting with make up and over my few years, I’ve picked up a few tricks to make the dark eye looks work for me.

Use a few transition shades
The key is not to make the look too harsh. The more diffused and soft it is, the more “natural” it will look. I used a nude, a light brown, a taupe, then finally, the tiniest bit of black in the crease, making sure everything was extremely soft and blended. If you start with the lightest shade and work your way down to the deepest, everything will blend that much smoother.

Start slow
I find that using a black that is slightly less dark or pigmented and slowly building up colour is the best method for any harsh look. I took my time and built up a few layers of shadow before getting this effect. I always tap off any excess shadow before putting the brush to my eye, and I make sure my brush touches the area I want to be darkest first.

Make all of your features stand out
With a bold eye, all of your other features need a little love to make the look cohesive. The look you’re going for is dramatic. For example, I used a luminous primer, a heavier foundation, a bolder blush and lipstick, and darker brow product.

Don’t forget your under eye
And I don’t just mean concealer, as important as that is when wearing a dark look. Using a brightening concealer that covers everything is pretty required or your dark circles (or at least MY dark circles) steal the show. Not only that, but if you wear a grey/black liner and some mascara on your bottom lashes, it brings the whole eye look together. Liner and lashes always look good with a dark smokey eye.

#MOTD: My Wedding Day

For the big day, I had to use the products that were near and dear to my heart so many of these are holy grail status make up items. It’s a great idea to use your die hard products on important days (such as a wedding) to ensure you have one less thing to worry about through the day. You know how everything wears, you know it wont cause problems, and you feel and look great.

Before the make up though, I did a spa-like skin care routine to make sure my face was perfectly even, plump and ready for make up. My tip: use a charcoal mask to remove some impurities the night before and a brightening, hydrating sheet mask the morning of.

I am so pleased with the end result. I felt beautiful and glowing on my big day. I loved having the sparkles and pop of colour on the eyes. What make up did you wear/will you wear on your wedding day?

#MOTD: Brozed beauty for pale skin

It’s summer and that means it’s time for even the palest of people to look a little more bronzed up. I am and never have been a big bronzer user but my opinion has totally changed with the addition of a few new products that are perfect for this season. Here is my bronzed up look for all of the pale people out there!

Foundation: I skipped out on a primer to get the full benefits and natural look of the Murad Oil Control Mattifier with SPF 15 plus the Derma E BB Creme with SPF 20 in light. This combination is you skin but better plus things out the BB cream which is slightly too dark on its own.

Concealer: I used the Essence Say No to Dark Circles concealer under my eyes. Yes, I have extremely dry skin under one of my eyes. It is annoying. Let’s ignore it.

Eye primer: Urban Decay Primer Potion.

Powder: Elf Tone Correcting Powder in Cool to do a little bit of colour correcting since this BB cream is a touch dark for me still.

Bronzer: The star of the show is this Physicians Formula #Instaready Super BB Bronzer. Both super natural and just overly stunning.

Highlight: Wet n Wild Fergie Highlight in Hollywood Boulevard.

Blush: Summer means cream blush and I took a page from Nancy (aka Spiffykerms) book and used NYX Cream Blush in Glow.

Eyeshadow: I used the Wet n Wild Comfort Zone Eye shadow palette. Starting with the taupe browbone shade in my crease then deepening it us with the gorgeous brown crease shade on the left. On my eye lid, I wanted something a little bronze so I went with the eyelid shade.

Eye liner: I used a thin layer of the Annabelle Stay Sharp eye liner in Bronzey in my waterline with some of my eyelid shade on top.

Mascara: Too Faced Better Than Sex.

Brows: For my brows, I used the Annabelle Browshow liner and highlighter on my brows and brow bone.

Lipstick: A combination of the Annabelle Stay Sharp lip liner in Java and the Essence Long Lasting Lipstick in Get The Look for that extra boost of colour.

This look is rather simple considering how luminous and perfected I felt! All of these products were totally pale-skin friendly and animal friendly (cruelty-free). I hope you enjoyed this look! Let me know what I should do next.
